My name is Areli Rios and I am a UCLA student majoring in Political Science, Spanish, and Chicana/o Studies. My passion to explore past the class lectures has broadened my understanding of society and has led me to engage in multiple social justice groups. One issue that concerns me is the "felon" label given to ex-convicts, a label that haunts them for the rest of their lives and impedes their re-integration into society.

I am hoping that you might be willing to sponsor me in breaking this world record, not only to raise awareness of the need for resources for the ex-convict community, but also to help fund a non-profit organization that helps ex-prisoner: Homeboy Industries. In order to raise awareness of this social justice issue, I will attempt to break the World Record, Youngest Woman to run 100 Marathons (26.2 miles each).

Homeboy Industries is a large non-profit organization that offers ex-convicts a second chance to reinvent their lives. In the last 30 years, the numbers of incarcerated prisoners have increased from 300,000 to 2 million, making the United States the leading country with the largest and fastest growing count of prisoners. After being released, convicts are labeled as "felons" and obtain a second-class citizen, which decreases their opportunities of finding stable jobs because of their "felon" status or access to financial aid. Homeboy Industries lowers the societal barriers of these individuals who strive to better themselves by offering multiple services and programs for free. These programs include: tattoo removal, employment services, case management and legal services, mental health-substance abuse-domestic violence services, education services, and a solar panel installation training and certification program. I have always considered that one way to ease the transition for ex-convicts lies in implementing education and rehabilitation resources such as those that Homeboy Industry provides. These resources provide opportunities for ex-convicts, their families, and an opportunity at different professions.

In terms of my quest to break this World Record, I started a project called "Strides for Justice" to raise awareness on prisons through running. I initiated challenging this record last year through my participation in three marathons. Starting this August, I will break this record by running 95 more marathons in 95 weeks. As a young Latina student, my goal is to inspire my colleagues to become more informed about the prison system.

My only challenge in accomplishing this goal is the financial obligation that comes with it. Any donations towards Homeboy Industries, towards my marathon races, traveling expenses, attire, shoe donations, water, wearing strides for justice apparel, or raising awareness within your own community to support the cause will be greatly appreciated and greatly valuable in helping us raise awareness.

More information about my journey, my races, and ways in which you can help me reach my fundraising goal can be found at http://stridesforjustice.wix.com/strides-for-justice. Please help me reconstruct society's misconception of ex-convicts and the prison system and support Homeboy Industries and the invaluable resources they provide to these neglected members of our community.

I thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Areli Rios
