Brandon's New Heart

My nephew, Brandon, has had an incredible journey.  When he was born born he had a hole in his heart called a ventricular septal defect or a VSD. It is a hole in the heart separating the two lower chambers of the heart. He was handling it well an the doctors wanted to wait until he was bigger to surgically fix it. At three months old he was having a harder time and it was decided it was time to fix it. In Sept 2012, Brandon had open heart surgery at CHLA to close the VSD as well as another smaller hole called an ASD.In November of 2012 at a regular cardiology check up Brandon was diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy. Cardiomyopathy is a chronic and sometimes progressive disease in which the heart muscle (myocardium), is abnormally enlarged, thickened and/or stiffened. The condition typically begins in the walls of the heart's lower chambers (ventricles), and in more severe cases also affects the walls of the upper chambers (atria). The actual muscle cells as well as the surrounding tissues of the heart become damaged. Eventually, the weakened heart loses the ability to pump blood effectively and heart failure or irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias or dysrhythmia) may occur. With this diagnosis we are told he will need a heart transplant. He was on the list for a week when my sister got the call on September 2, 2014. We are so thrilled and over the moon that he will recieve a new heart. There are so many emotions going on right now.  We thought he would be on the list so much longer and so we weren't quite prepared. We were planning on doing a lot of fundraising for him and his family to help with the

medical bills. We are so fortunate for this amazing miracle and ask that you help this loving and deserving family.  Although they do have medical insurance the amount of medication, hospital stays, doctor's visits and so much more will be very hard on them in the future. We are so grateful to everyone who has prayed for this sweet little boy. Thank you all so much for all the support!

It has officially been one month since Brandon got his new heart! This has been a crazy ride and it is so amazing to see his progress each and every day. He is just a joy to have around and we are so grateful to each and every one of you to have made such a difference in this little boy's life as well as in the lives of his family. Your donations have made it possible for Jessica and Joseph to completely focus their time on Brandon and getting him as healthy as he can. They don't have to worry about where they are going to get the money to pay for each and every doctor's visit or the multitude of medication that he has to take. It is an amazing blessing for them and one that they do not take for granted. Each and every one of your donations has been met with gratitude and thanks. There can't possibly be enough thank yous to go around for all of the love and support that has been shown. It has been an amazing ride and will continue to just get better and better. Thank you all again, we love and appreciate all of you.

Brandon’s first smile!

We got our first smile! Thank you for all the amazing love and prayers and support and wonderful donations. You are a big part of this amazing miracle.

This morning he is off for full general anesthesia, intubation, and a heart biopsy.

Why a heart biopsy ? This is one of the main ways to check for rejection. It allows the team to see rejection early enough to treat it.The procedure is much more then a blood draw. It actually involves removing a small pieces of the heart. The small pieces of heart are then sent to the laboratory to be tested for rejection.

Brandon is in for the first heart biopsy procedure which is first done about a week after transplant, then once a week for about six weeks. All being well and no rejection being found Brandon will then have his biopsies every two weeks for the next three months or so. Then once a month, then once every two months until his first year is up.

Thank you again for sharing this donation page beyond the reaches of personally knowing this amazing family. It is so heartwarming to see the amazing kindness come from Brandon’s story. Thank you!!!!
Brandon's first smile!
