Heading back to Philadelphia next month for my 3rd brain surgery.
If you really know me you know that back in 2009 I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. My son wasn’t even 1 yet. My future seemed uncertain.
Biopsys were done and I was told that surgery to remove it really was not an option since it was in my speech center. However the seizures I was experiencing kept happening.
Years pass and I’m still experiencing seizures, 5 a day, despite the fact I’m maxed out on 4 different seizure medications. I knew it was time to make a change.
Headed to Philadelphia with my dad and wife to see Dr Brem who couldn’t believe we waited so long to seek additional treatment. Surgery was a must and it happened in weeks. My son was only 5 and never fully understood what was happening to me.
Six hour awake surgery in the books. Repeated words they said to me and did a hand shake when asked. Couldn’t say a word but I told a story about growing up playing tennis. Dr Brem said 95% of the brain tumor was gone. Traveling back home after was a chore, not only for me but my family too as we were trying to conserve money and fly into Jacksonville. So after the flight, we had to drive an additional 2 hours home. I hope you never know the feeling, but driving that long of a distance after major brain surgery is not fun, but we made it.
Fast forward to now and here we are. The tumor has returned so back to Philly we go, this time without the amazing Wells Fargo insurance we once had. This time all the expenses of travel, hotel, food etc. coming out of pocket. Also the cost of MRI’s, mental tests (before and after) follow ups, chemo, radiation treatment and surgery are about 20% of the costs.
I’m not wanting to miss any more time away from my son, who is now 9, so this time he is coming with me. Quality time with him is much needed and appreciated.
Surgery is scheduled for August 3rd, must arrive July 30 for testing etc.
