Brain Surgery by Dr Charlie Teo for Gracie!

Gracie De Lazzer who is seventeen years of age has a rare condition called a sub arachnoid cyst which usually affects approximately one percent of the population. What makes her situation even rarer is that most of the time these cysts go undetected as they usually do not cause any major problems to the brain. Many people have these and would never know it. However in Gracie’s situation her cyst is continuing to grow and as it stands takes up one quarter of her brain space which means she continues to develop life threatening symptoms due to the pressure placed on surrounding brain structures. She intermittently has lost her speech, hearing & vision, right side of her body movements, and has frequent migraines and has more recently developed re-occurring seizures. Due to the fact that her condition is so rare there are many professionals unable to perform the surgery she requires due to a lack of exposure to such an illness. This has lead us to seek out the professional opinion of Dr Charlie Teo who has himself only performed three of these procedures throughout his lengthy career. Due to the fact that there is limited support or professionals available through the public system in Melbourne to treat her condition, she requires surgical intervention from Dr Charlie Teo or risks major haemorrhage or stroke which could lead to permanent disability. This procedure is to be done through the private hospital system in Sydney which a substantial amount goes to hospital fees along with Dr Charlie Teo’s professional fees to perform the operation.

Some of you may know Gracie.. and you will know she is the most caring beautiful soul. Gracie left school at a young age as her passion was to be a hairdresser and is now nearly qualified. From the moment she was little she knew what she wanted and she was determined to achieve it. Gracie has twin sisters who are 14 years old, who she absolutely adores and they look up to her. Words can't describe what an amazing person she is and as a mum, I couldn't have asked for more, shes not only my child but my best friend.
