Doris was a brilliant scientist specialized in animal research. At university, she stood out as one of the most promising students, awarded internationally even before completing her degree. Her capacity landed her a job at the Ghana Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), at the Animal Research Institute. Doris’s life was on track. As a mother, a spouse, and a brilliant woman with a bright career ahead of her, she could not ask for more. That is when the headaches started. Sudden, sever and excruciating pain that would leave her defenceless and exhausted. After three emergency visits at the hospital and several exams and CT scans it was clear that Doris was suffering from a brain aneurysm. At the same time, she also received the news that her condition could not be treated in Ghana. Doris knew that her life was at stake. At that point, the only viable solution for her was to go to India to receive a life-saving surgery.
Doris’s background and connections allowed her to raise the necessary funds to afford the travel and successfully recover from the aneurysm. As a survivor, she has dedicated her life to bring awareness in Ghana and became an advocate for brain aneurysm patients. In 2014, she founded the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, an NGO with a mission to educate the public and lobby the government to allocate funds and create a specialized centre to treat the condition.
Despite her commitment there is much that needs to be done. Few people in Ghana can afford a brain scan to detect brain aneurysms, and there is only one hospital in Ghana that currently has the equipment.
Most people are not as lucky as Doris. Fifty-percent of patients do not experience or show any symptoms, dying within minutes of the aneurysm rupture. Prof Isabella Quakyi, President of the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, described brain aneurysms as a silent killer. Lives could be saved if victims knew the risks and signs of brain aneurysms and how to get help.
