Putting America's Youth to Work

$1,380 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 40 people in 11 months

My name is Tammy T. Willis, CEO of Born to Win Community Development Corporation, Inc. (BTWCDC). We are a not-for-profit organization operating in  the heart of Brooksville, Florida's inner-city. Because of the efforts and hard work of our youths, volunteers, community partners and parents, our program has been able to accomplish so many successful milestones such as peer-to-mentoring services, afterschool tutoring,  we have taken 50 at-risk youths out of the State of Florida for the last nine years.

With your help, BTWCDC will continue to strive to accomplish our current goal of providing Summer jobs for 50 youths. It is our desire to compensate each child  with a  stipend of $400.00 for seven-weeks of work.  Our "Job Ed" program will operate four days a week beginning June 12th until July 27th. BTWCDC's  Summer Youth Job Program start time will be  9:00 am until 3:00 pm Tuesday through Friday. We are asking you to help us by donationg to sponsor a child. BTWCDC will conclude our fundraising efforts on July 19th, 2018.  Some of the key areas of training for each youth will be:

* Career Planning
*Job  Interviewing Techniques
*Resume Writing
*Developing Interpersonal skills for the Workplace
*Improving Reading, Writing and Mathematic Skills

We are deliberately targeting low-income youths who are between the age of thirteen to twenty-one. We believe that these young people are currently facing so many barriers when trying to enter the workforce.  Our goal is to make this effort a little easier by helping our youths to  be better prepared by giving them the tools to be job ready.  It has been proven that summer youth  employment has so many other benefits. Recent research suggests that summer jobs can help reduce violent behavior and crime including the use of drugs and alcohol, physical fighting, damaging property, and threatening someone with a weapon (Sum, Trubskyy, and McHugh 2013).
Since its inception, BTWCDC has successfully seen that all of our youths have graduated . More than half o all of our students went on to attend college . Those individuals who aren't enrolled in college, they are gainfully employed. Our greatest pride and accomplishment is that none of our youth have ever been in trouble with the law. They all are living as productive citizens in Hernando County and surrounding areas in Florida. We have had more than twenty of our youths to complete college. Surely, does this say; we are on the right path.

BTWCDC initially began as a grass-root effort in 2003, a group of concerned individuals got together to address the awful problems plaguing our community’s youths. We began offering tutoring and mentoring programs using office space donated by our local businessmen and faith-based organizations, alone with our County’s libraries and parks. Over the years, we have have grown our partnership  with numerous organizations inside and outside of the State of Florida allowing us to provide our youth with summer trips to places such as Atlanta, Chicago, Arkansas, and Louisiana. We believe that the more that a child experiences of the world, the more likely they are to understand that there is more than what is around them.  We believe exploring the world creates hope and inspires young dreamers to dream.

Recently, we  completed the restoration of a historical building donated to BTWCDC. This building has been a source of great pride and allowed us to expand our services to more under-served youths and their families.

With the arrival of the summer, BTWCDC is  actively looking for positive ways to engage youth in supportive, pro-social activities. We strongly believe that our summer employment program will offer great opportunities for our community's youths. It will assist our program participants with developing a work history for future employment.

BTWCDC  summer youth program will ensure that our youths  gain valuable workforce experience , while providing a safe, productive way to spend their time. Our summer youth program will also provide an earning opportunity for those youths who participate in our program over the summer months, and wil include job readiness training and other supportive resources.

Anyone who has had to provide for teenagers, they know that purchasing school supplies and clothing can be one of the greatest expenses and challenges facing a low-income family. When underserved youths are able to work summer jobs their income has often been a wonderful help in this particular area. In the past, we have had families to express their gratitude for this type of financial help. We pride ourselves in being able to lend a hand up rather than a handout. Our parents have expressed their appreciation and peace of mind knowing that their child was engaged in a positive learning experience, while they were at work.

With the current challenges facing our community, youth employment rates have decreased dramatically over the past decade as the economy has faltered and our youth population has grown. Unemployment rates among youths are especially acute during the summer. Through our summer program we hope to address this problem.

One of BTWCDC’s primary objectives is to strengthen and expand work-related summer activities that will help with fostering skill development, improving educational attainment, and the economic success of low-income youths. Our goal is to provide summer jobs for at least 50 youths from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

Over a period of eight weeks, it is the aim of BTWCDC to build our youth's workforce readiness skills,. We will focus on skill development, building a base for a long lasting relationship for mentor-ship and access to
community resources, while striving to improve the educational and economic success of our low-income youths.
