Borneo Clean Water Project

Humanitarian Aid Project – Borneo 22 July to 11 August 2019

In the summer of 2019, 15 students together with myself and Staff of Lewes Old Grammar School, will be involved in a Humanitarian Aid project in Borneo, which is being led by an organisation called Really Wild Education from Brighton.

The people in this part of the world are caught in a poverty cycle due to a lack of government funding for education for the young people who live on the islands in the South China Sea. We intend to go there and help break this poverty cycle.  2019’s humanitarian activity will be based on helping to provide clean drinking water for a small village on Banggi Island, which is located to the north of Borneo.

In order to be prepared for the expedition we will be trained with appropriate survival skills required to exist in the harsh environment of the jungle. In preparation for this expedition, we will be completing three training weekends, which the school is funding, so that we are fully prepared for what we will experience. Part of the trip will also involve all students and staff being placed on a deserted island for five days. The tuition and survival skills learnt will provide us with the necessary expertise to live for that period of time only using local resources.

The plan would be to ship all the materials in the months prior to us going to Borneo, so that all the equipment and tools were there on our arrival. We are also looking at funding to take a specialist team with us who will be able to help install the systems we propose.

The YouTube video attached to this page is of the last team who went to Borneo. The Students were tasked with building a new dining room and kitchen in the local school. This has had a major positive affect on the lives of the staff and children and reduced the risks of ill health.
