The Sleeping Storyteller's BOOKS@HOME Campaign

£65 of £1,000 goal

We all want children to love reading, to do well in school and to be happy, don't we? But recent research shows that 1 in 8 Children from the UK, aged 8 and over, who live in a low income family, DO NOT OWN BOOKS AT HOME and what's more, this is having a detrimental effect  on their literacy skills and well being.

When I found this out, I was so taken aback. I couldn't believe it, that in today's world, we have vast numbers of children with no books! As a Children's Author, I knew that I had to do something about it and that together, with your generosity,  we can easily change this. Let me explain in more detail.

Hello, my name is Cheryl Beer. I am the Creator of The Sleeping Storyteller, a Child Led Story Book Company based in West Wales. I work with children to write and publish mindful stories in pocket sized books.

In December 2018, The National Literacy Trust released statistics showing that 1 in 8 children from low income families, aged 8 plus, do not own books at home. I worked out what this means in terms of the real figures for us, here in Wales. The Literacy Trust surveyed 44,000 children. They used the indicator of free school dinners to determine those children from 'low income families.'

In Wales, last year, we had @ 74,000 children who qualified for free school dinners. That's 74,000 children from families on a low income. If we take the calculation of 1:8,  that means approx 9,250 children across Wales, do not own any books of their own, at all! They have no books at home.

WHY IS HAVING BOOKS AT HOME SO IMPORTANT?

The research also found that children who DID have books at home, were more likely to enjoy reading, were more likely to attain better literacy skills in school, were more likely to read regularly and were generally happier. The flip side of this means that those without books at home are more likely to read less, enjoy reading less, attain poor results in literacy and are unhappier ...

Together, you and I can put this right, very easily indeed, because I write and make books with children for children, working primarily, in low income areas, so I have easy access to the schools and organisations that can distribute books.

FOR EVERY £2 THAT YOU DONATE A CHILD FROM A LOW INCOME FAMILY WILL RECEIVE A BOOK OF THEIR VERY OWN, TO TAKE HOME.

So, if you donate £20, you will know in your heart, that you have put books into the homes of 10 children, giving them a greater chance of falling in love with reading, doing well in school and living a happier life. Just think of the difference we could make if you donated £100.00! That would mean that you had put books into the hands of 50 children. That's how easy it is to be the change that you want to see in the world.

Thank you for caring & for your kind donation,
Cheryl Beer
