As Nelson Mandela says, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
On Tuesday, September 4th, the principal of McGaugh Elementary in the Los Alamitos Unified School District referred to Colin Kaepernick as “an anti-American thug” on her Facebook Page. Los Alamitos is also the first city to pass an anti-sanctuary ordinance to not comply with the California Values Act Law.
As parents of children in Los Alamitos Schools and members of the community, it has been painful to see how these events in our city and across the country has caused divide and tension among neighbors and classmates. Students of linguistic and cultural diversity represent more than 50% of the student population at in our district. We are raising funds to purchase books promoting human rights, multicultural awareness, and sanctuary for all 10 Los Alamitos Schools. Literature is a powerful vehicle to help children AND adults understand their homes, communities, and the world. All children should have the opportunity to see themselves reflected in the literature available at their school as well as learn about the histories, contributions, and struggles of others whose lives are still not included in school text. Please help us combat prejudice and promote inclusiveness and tolerance – one book at a time.
