Tijuana Firefighter A. Balderrama

Adolfo was a Tijuana firefighter who began his service to the community as a “Bombero Junior” (Junior Firefighter) at the early age of 10.  He wanted to become a career firefighter like his father and two uncles.  He eventually got hired as a temp, the step before the coveted full-time and vested “base”.  Adolfo respected by his peers as a motivated firefighter, with a strong interest and training in technical rescue.  He was an asset to the Tijuana Fire Department and a great friend to many of its members.


In the afternoon of June 20, 2017, there were three active vegetation fires in Tijuana, spreading fire resources thin across the city.  Adolfo and his partner arrived to one of them in their rescue unit to support the single engine company that was working a steep hillside fire.  Adolfo ended up trying to attack the fire from a side when the fire behavior suddenly and unexpectedly changed for the worst; he was not able to survive the extreme fire conditions that followed.


Adolfo left behind his young family; a loving wife, daughters Loreley (7) and Kendra (4), and son Jesus Adolfo (1 ½).  Aside from the great emotional loss, Adolfo’s absence leaves his family without his financial support.  The status of Adolfo as a temp provides only minimal death benefits and no pension for their future.
