Clothing and Food Drive for Houston

Donation protected
Greetings my name is Brandona Allen and I am a doctoral student at Purdue University.  As you know Houston, TX has been devasted due to Hurricane Harvey. Many areas of Houston and surrounding areas have seen massive amounts of rain causing heavy flooding throughout the area.  Some are our relatives, friends, and former boilermakers. In this difficult time we are reminded how fortunate we are and how easily it can be taken away. Join me as I collect clothing, food, and funding for the citizens of Houston and the surrounding areas. We can help them rebuild as best we can and demonstrate what it means to be boilermakers and a friend.

Many of you have poured in asking to help and others offered up great advice. One of the sound advice explained issues of sending physical donations can cause a havoc for places that receive physical gifts.
I encourage everyone to support by which ever means you can donate. You are not obligated to donate physically or financially. I will still set up physical drop off spots around campus (as many have already begun to commit to obtaining a spot in their buildings). However, I do agree we should focus more on the financial aspect of the giving to alleviate any burdens to organizations on the ground in Houston helping with the disaster. As such I have updated the gofundme to accept a larger donation threshold that will be used to purchase food, gift cards, and other products that will be sent to organizations throughout Houston. I also have attached other organizations you can donate to monetarily. I want us to be in the best position possible to give back but not become a burden but I also recognize not everyone who wishes to give back will be able to do so financially and some of us have an abundance to give from within our own homes. I do not want to take away from anyone's efforts and attempts to help but please consider first the monetary donation sites.

For those who wish to donate physically we are looking for any used (but still wearable) or new clothing and shoes will be collected. We will also accept diapers, baby wipes, boxes of water and canned goods. The plan is to collect the clothing and non-perishable foods and ship them to several different shelters and organizations once a week with the first shipping on September 11th and every Monday afterwards until October 9th. I will have a drop off bucket outside of the graduate offices in AGAD 221 beginning Thursday August 31st. If you would like to set up a drop off location in your building please email ASAP and I can get this information out to others.

We will also accept boxes and assistance on shipping days if you would like to help out then. There are other organizations in Houston that you can also donate financial assistance to directly and I have provided several of those organizations:

Interfaith Ministries http://www.imgh.org
Houston Food Bank http://www.houstonfoodbank.org
Healthcare for the Homeless http://www.homeless-healthcare.org
