Bob Kerr Cancer Recovery Fund

He bravely fought in Vietnam, and he battled for the win with cancer. But the road to recovery continues for our Dad. Now he needs financial support to complete the last step along his journey.

"Whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith."  —Matthew 21:22

In June 2016, Bob Kerr (our dad) was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. This pillar of strength, God-loving, decorated Vietnam Vet and proud Marine (who would gladly give his life for his country even today) faced another deadly battle; like before, he stepped right into the fight without hesitation. With the love and support of his family and friends, and by the grace of God, our dad beat cancer.

Though now in recovery, the treatments were difficult and not without complications. Along with the illness, he fought a life-threatening infection and a blood clot. He lost all his teeth, critical bone mass in his jaw, and the ability to chew solid food. For months, he was forced to get his only nutrition through a feeding tube. He lost a lot of weight and strength, and even his voice, temporarily. A proud man, few even knew what he was going through. He continued to help his friends and neighbors with their projects, support and celebrate other local vets, and faithfully volunteer at his church.

"Beloved, I pray that all may go well with you and that you may be in good health, just as it is well with your soul." —3 John 2

To complete his recovery journey, Bob has one more big step: undergo oral reconstructive surgery to repair the bone loss and replace his teeth. The costs associated with this procedure are not insignificant, ranging anywhere from $40,000 to well over $50,000. While grateful to the VA benefits that got him through the cancer treatment and separate hospital stays, the VA will not provide financial assistance for this next step. Bob jokes that smoothies, ice cream and mashed potatoes are just fine. But the reality is that his health continues to be compromised without adequate nutrition from healthy, whole foods, which he can only get with the ability to chew.

"And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." —Colossians 3:17

With some convincing and prayer, Bob reluctantly allowed us to create this campaign. The financial and emotional burdens of fighting cancer is overwhelming for any family. Travel and accommodations to treatment centers, loss of wages, specialty services and countless other expenses create significant pressure. It was tough for Bob and his wife Brenda during treatments, but the added expense for this surgery is simply out of reach without assistance.

So, please consider supporting the last step in Bob’s recovery by giving generously to our cheerful, wonderful father, cherished grandfather, amazing husband and helpful, loyal friend. And please share this campaign across your networks to help us spread the word. The more shares, the more successful we'll be in reaching our goal.

On behalf of the family, we are so very thankful for the outpouring of love and support our Dad has already received and especially grateful for all the prayers—we cannot thank you enough.

With love and deep gratitude,
The Kerr daughters: Julie Waring, Michele Fielding & Kelly Fowler
