Piper's urgent molar extraction!

Piper is one of the eight Blue Star Working Horse Ambassadors at Blue Star Equiculture. She is an integral member of our working herd and her help in the community, sharing her magnificence beauty and strength and intelligence is immeasurable. Piper grew up on our farm along with her brothers Alfie, Remix and Mario all of whom came with her in 2012. They were a gift to our organization from Cliff and Kathleen Jackson of Poland Springs, Maine. The Jackson's wanted their horses to stay together and be of service to the retired and disabled and homeless working horses to help with teaching draft horse driving and husbandry at the Stockbridge Agricultural School and University of Massachusetts students and for assisting in raising funds with horse-powered jobs in our community.

Piper does parades, agricultural work, wagon rides, sleigh rides, weddings, funerals and community events and so much more. Piper is also the lead mare in her herd of working horses, her role and contribution are irreplaceable.

In the late Fall, we discovered that Piper has a cracked molar that needs to be removed soon before it causes more problems for her. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts with a local equine dentist, we have decided to bring her to the New Bolton Center Hospital for Large Animals in Kennett Square, PA. Several working horse friends have had successful extractions here without having to go under general anesthesia. This procedure is complicated, and we want to give her the very best opportunity possible. Thanks to Linda Kramer at 76 Carriage Co. in Philadelphia Piper has been offered space to recover before coming home. This offer to stay at their barn will help defray the cost of her recovery enormously.

The cost of this extraction will be up to $2500 with possible extra costs for antibiotics and pain medicine. This amount also includes any travel and unforeseen expenses for her journey to wellness.
