Blu-berry and Skippy's Recovery

Donation protected
Blu-berry and her brother Skippy arrived at BUTTONNOSES rescue on Friday 27 January.

Being in rescue so long, not many things can truly shock you. Seeing Blu-berry and her brother Skippy were enough to shake up any rescue veteran.

These furkids were so smelly it was hard to breathe around them. Blu's fur was missing, her skin exposed, swollen and raw. Her teeth rotten, her nails long, her body and heart broken. Her brother Skippy stayed at the back of the crate for hours until he ventured out.

It's hard to look at these 2 kids. But despite everything they have been through, their tails still wag and there is still hope in their eyes.

Blu and Skippy went to the vet on Saturday 28 January. We weren't too worried about Skippy because he looks better than Blu. We are still waiting on a lot of results for both of them, but here is what we do know:

Blu's skin - This could be Cushing disease , or thyroid problems, or just plain old alopecia. They drew blood (hence the cute little bandage) to investigate. Whatever the case, she now also has a skin yeast infection secondary to hair loss. She went home with medicated shampoo and topical cream, which would need to be applied daily. While they run her blood tests they will also check for heartworm. Her bulging belly is not a good sign so hopefully blood tests will shed some light on what's going on inside. The good news? Her heart is strong as far as we can see.

Unfortunately the outcome for Skippy came as a horrible surprise: he was diagnosed with a grade 5-6 heart murmer (for those of you who don't know, grade 6 is the worst you can get, with an outcome of heart failure). The ultrasound (to confirm the murmer and estimate how long he has left) alone is going to cost $450, not to mention the monthly medication. Whatever his outcome, we want him to know what real love is. Skippy was abandoned in an old apartment and left for dead. He does not know love. He does not know kindness.

We have had some great help so far with food, supplements and medical donations, but what we really need to get these kids healthy and happy is a large chunk of change. The vet bills, blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds and medication are estimated to exceed $3,000. We are asking for any help possible and a little more than $3,000 to make sure these 2 get what they need to help them on their road to recovery. As the bills come in, we will post estimates photos and all of their results. Any additional funds raised will go straight back into the BUTTONNOSES rescue, where we have successfully rehabilitated and fostered many dogs.

Please help us to show these 2 what real love is and make sure that whatever their outcome, they know true kindness and warmth.
