Blu-berry and Skippy's Recovery

$5,000 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 100 people in 28 months
Blu-berry and her brother Skippy arrived at BUTTONNOSES rescue on Friday 27 January.

Being in rescue so long, not many things can truly shock you. Seeing Blu-berry and her brother Skippy were enough to shake up any rescue veteran.

These furkids were so smelly it was hard to breathe around them. Blu's fur was missing, her skin exposed, swollen and raw. Her teeth rotten, her nails long, her body and heart broken. Her brother Skippy stayed at the back of the crate for hours until he ventured out.

It's hard to look at these 2 kids. But despite everything they have been through, their tails still wag and there is still hope in their eyes.

Blu and Skippy went to the vet on Saturday 28 January. We weren't too worried about Skippy because he looks better than Blu. We are still waiting on a lot of results for both of them, but here is what we do know:

Blu's skin - This could be Cushing disease , or thyroid problems, or just plain old alopecia. They drew blood (hence the cute little bandage) to investigate. Whatever the case, she now also has a skin yeast infection secondary to hair loss. She went home with medicated shampoo and topical cream, which would need to be applied daily. While they run her blood tests they will also check for heartworm. Her bulging belly is not a good sign so hopefully blood tests will shed some light on what's going on inside. The good news? Her heart is strong as far as we can see.

Unfortunately the outcome for Skippy came as a horrible surprise: he was diagnosed with a grade 5-6 heart murmer (for those of you who don't know, grade 6 is the worst you can get, with an outcome of heart failure). The ultrasound (to confirm the murmer and estimate how long he has left) alone is going to cost $450, not to mention the monthly medication. Whatever his outcome, we want him to know what real love is. Skippy was abandoned in an old apartment and left for dead. He does not know love. He does not know kindness.

We have had some great help so far with food, supplements and medical donations, but what we really need to get these kids healthy and happy is a large chunk of change. The vet bills, blood work, x-rays, ultrasounds and medication are estimated to exceed $3,000. We are asking for any help possible and a little more than $3,000 to make sure these 2 get what they need to help them on their road to recovery. As the bills come in, we will post estimates photos and all of their results. Any additional funds raised will go straight back into the BUTTONNOSES rescue, where we have successfully rehabilitated and fostered many dogs.

Please help us to show these 2 what real love is and make sure that whatever their outcome, they know true kindness and warmth.

Hello friends of Blu and Pepito ( Skippy),

Thought we should post an update on the little nuggets.

Pepito continues to do well despite his heart condition. He is enjoying life , and we will continue to provide to notch care for as long as he is around and loving life.

Blu has been doing ok despite many challenges that she has had to overcome. Her collapsed trachea has good days ( she can breathe) and really bad days ( she struggles for Air and at times has to be rushed to the emergency ). He skin is also super sensitive and she gets the occasional flare ups and reactions that make her extremely uncomfortable. But she is a brave little trooper and continues to fight each and every setback. And she is loved, spoiled and cared for by her entire team of rescuers, veterinarians, Bowen therapist, and of course fans and supporters.
Her ongoing care is expensive. So please contribute to her fund every now and then if you can. And of course share her story with your friends. And say a prayer her way.
She has her own Instagram page and she would appreciate a follow. @bluthechi

A little update on these two little nuggets:

Skippy (now Pepito) seems to be doing well on his (expensive) medication. He is currently stable and has good quality of life. He has even come out of his shell and instead of being scared of his own shadow and wanting to hide from the world all the time, he has now learned to accept and (mostly) enjoy human touch. He has even learned to play with toys and other dogs!

Blu-berry is also doing really well. She still does have skin flare ups here and there, but with daily coconut rubs and high quality food and supplements, she seems to be improving every day. She's a fragile little girl with a very sensitive skin, but she is enjoying life to the fullest now that she is not itchy anymore, and is being loved and cared for like the princess she was always meant to be.

Thank you all for your continued support. Please don't forget about these two deserving pups. Caring for them and keeping them stable and healthy is costly. Donations of any amount would be hugely appreciated.

I was such a brave girl today - I had my stitches taken out from my cyst removal last week. You can't even see the scar. On another note - since I had a bunch of teeth removed, my tongue now hangs out from all angles ! Stay tuned for more updates and posts of Pepito and Blu!
