Hello, my name is Blossom Ojukwu, I am a rising senior at the University of Maryland College Park where I am pursing a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance and a Bachelors of Music Education.

Music as a Healer

Growing up I never imagined I'd be pursuing a career in music. Like most first generation immigrants I aspired to be a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or any career that was sure to be lucrative, prestigious, and grounding. In fact, it was expected of me. We were a poor immigrant family in an unending cycle of struggle and minute victories, victories that lasted long enough to put food on the table once maybe twice a day. As the eldest of three, I was the silver lining for any hope of achieving the American Dream. Yet here I am today, an aspiring opera singer.

In my formative years, music provided respite in my ever fluctuating roller coaster of a life. During tumultuous times, music was the reason I got up every day. When hope was dim and lack was heavy, the memory of my voice lesson or choir rehearsal sprung me out of bed. Music healed my innumerable emotional and physical wounds. Fortunately, I was pretty good at it and was awarded a full merit based scholarship to study music at the University of Maryland (parents couldn't argue that).

In many ways music gave me life and a purpose for living. As an educator I hope to awaken the spirits of my students through meaningful music-making, and as a singer I aspire to transcend modes of healing through my story and my art.

My Love for the Opera

"Love. Death. Envy. Zeal. Devotion. Joy. Pain" Opera has the unique ability to express the inexpressible yearnings of the heart. It transcends all written and oral communication. The human voice is capable of revealing emotions and affections that are inadequately articulated. My love for the opera lies it its ability to communicate the inexpressible.

The Importance of Supplemental Education

During my post-secondary career, my goal is to gain fruitful professional and academic experiences that will allow me to be a gainfully employed artist and educator. However, to have a successful pre-professional career, supplemental education/training is imperative. Supplemental education provides learning and developmental enrichment opportunities outside of school. These opportunities are quite varied and often stratified for students with reliable financial resources. This summer I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the Little Patuxent Opera Institute (LPOI) at The Music Institute in Howard County, MD.

About LPOI

The Little Patuxent Opera Institute (LPOI) offers training for moderately advanced young operatic voices in a warm and nurturing collegiate environment. This program is designed to enhance the development of skills I need to succeed in the professional opera field, while providing valuable, meaningful performance opportunities and experience.

The tuition for this program is $1,200. Unfortunately, I do not have the financial resources to acquire this amount by the June 12th payment deadline. I am hoping that with your support I can reach my goal. Every donation, no matter what size, is a direct investment into my future and for that I am eternally grateful.

In gratitude,
