Surf Beyond The Light

Donation protected
My name is Joshua Loya. I lost my eyesight when I was 15 due to an existing health condition and an accident with nunchucks. At the time, I had no significant martial arts training. In the years after that, I went waterskiing, sky diving, rock climbing, and dabbled in martial arts.  In 2005, I began training in the martial arts consistently, and I haven’t stopped since. To date, I have earned 5 black belts, and I have rank in 7 different arts.

In August of 2016, I quit my job as a computer instructor, and I now train and teach martial arts full-time. I have also incorporated surfing into my adventure lifestyle, and I am competing in my first contest in October of 2017. My goal is to live life to the fullest, and to help expand the thinking of what is possible for blind and visually impaired people, as well as anyone who dares to live life without preconceptions about limitations.

It’s been a little over a year since I decided to boldly go into uncharted waters. I am very grateful to have my wife, Andrea, as an ally and training partner. I have some projects in development that will allow me to sustain my efforts, and to help others teach the principles I am learning as I explore this. That being said, I have a number of expenses that will need to be covered if I am to be successful until these projects have been completed.

Please partner with me in making the world a little less dark. I realize you could donate to other causes. There are a lot of people who are hurting right now. That being said, if you believe it would be good for you to help me in this endeavor, I would be very grateful. I have some upcoming tournaments, contests, and teaching opportunities. Everything I do, I do so I can help people realize that blindness is not a death sentence. It can be difficult, but it is absolutely possible to live a full and adventurous life, if you have the will to move forward.

Some of my costs include the following. Every little bit helps.

$260 – Editing and artwork for my forthcoming book.
