Blessed Bishop Kozal Memorial Fund

$948 of $500 goal

Raised by 26 people in 13 days
The Parish Church of Saint John the Baptist in Krotoszyn, Poland, was the spiritual home of Michal Kozal.  It was in this church where Michal was baptized, received his first holy communion, and chose to be confirmed in his Christian faith.  This spiritual home, this community of faith, fostered Michal Kozal’s desire to receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders.  His early life at Saint John the Baptist Church led to his future ordination as priest, his consecration as bishop, his acceptance of martyrdom in Dachau concentration camp, and his beatification by Pope John Paul II in June 1987.

This month (June 2019) by decree of Pope Francis, Saint John the Baptist Church in Krotoszyn will be granted the title of Basilica.  This is a very special honor for the church that was so instrumental in Blessed Michal Kozal’s life.  Accompanying Pope Francis’s decree, is the necessity to translate a relic of Blessed Michal to a reliquary within the newly dedicated Basilica.  Since Bishop Kozal’s body was burned in the Dachau crematorium and his ashes spread in a local field, the relic of Blessed Michal Kozal that will be transferred to the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist is a portion of his cassock.  This relic will be transferred from the Diocese of Wloclawek to city of Krotoszyn later this month.

In order to honor the memory of our dear cousin Blessed Bishop Michal Kozal and to keep the story of his martyrdom during World War II alive, the Kozal family in the United States has been asked to assist in the cost of the translation to and installment of his relic in the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist.  Similar efforts are being made by the Kozal family in Poland at this time.  For this reason we turn to our family, friends, acquaintances, and fellow sisters and brothers in the faith to help us with this memorial project.

I will be traveling with four close friends (Nicholas Palmer, Jean MacDonald, Mary Hellenbrand, and Carmen L. Nochera) to Poland on June 26, 2019.  We will celebrate a special jubilee Mass at the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist in Krotoszyn on July 5, where will present our donation for this memorial and place flowers at the altar dedicated to Blessed Michal Kozal.  If telling the story of a Christian martyr of the Holocaust is important to you, if you share a love for those who give their lives for a greater cause, or if you value the contributions of Polish people around the world, please help us with a donation.  For more information about Blessed Bishop Michal Kozal, please visit the following:

It is with gratefulness in my heart that I update you on the progress of our Blessed Bishop Michal Kozal Fund. With the additional money that was given to me directly over the last three days, today we reached $1,008.00 in donations. We will continue our endeavor until at least June 19, so please continue letting family and friends know about this fund by emailing or posting the link on social media. I cannot thank you enough for your generosity.

This morning I received a message from Maria (Nowak) Gabryelczyk, the daughter of the late Elzbieta Kozal and the niece of Blessed Bishop Michal Kozal. Many of you met Maria at Dominican Chapel Marywood last June or at my mother and father's 50th wedding anniversary last May. Maria informed me that the pastor of the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist purchased the reliquary that will be used to hold Michal's relic. She even met with the pastor today to see the reliquary, and he allowed her to photograph it. She sent the photo to me this afternoon, and I have added the photo of the reliquary for those who donated. It is beautiful, golden in color, and shaped like the top of a shepherd's staff (crosier); for indeed that is what Blessed Michal was -- a shepherd who gave his life for his sheep.

I also wanted to let you know that Maria has been chosen as one of the family members who will travel by bus with the pastor and several other dignitaries to the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Mary of the Assumption in the Diocese of Wloclawek for a special Mass this Friday, June 14 (the anniversary of the beatification of Bishop Michal Kozal). This cathedral is where Father Michal Kozal was consecrated bishop and where he was arrested by the Nazis before being sent to the concentration camp. It is at this special Mass where the relic will be handed over to Maria and the pastor and then transported to the newly declared Basilica of Saint John the Baptist in Krotoszyn. Maria sends her deepest love and gratitude for your help. She promises to reach out to you in a letter, although she is unable to speak or write English. Consequently, I told her that I would translate any letter that she writes and make both of them available to you.

Finally, the installation of the relic is set to take place on Sunday, June 23, 2019. I am fairly certain I will be receiving photographs from that event as well. I will be sure to share them with you. Also, remember that I will be present with friends and family on July 5th to celebrate a Jubilee Mass at the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist and offer our donations to the pastor for the reliquary and any other necessities as determined by him and the parish council. I will certainly take many photographs, which I promise to share with you.

Once again, I thank you for your generosity and for being true COMMUNITY to me and my family. Your donation is making a difference now and will continue to make a difference in the lives of many for generations to come.

With love and best wishes,

Jarek Kozal, Maria Gabryelczyk, and the Entire Kozal Family

Once again, I wanted to update you on our endeavor. We indeed reached our goal. In fact, we have gone above it, but WE ARE NOT DONE. In fact, if you know other friends and family members that might be interested in donating, please share our fund with them. I am overjoyed at your support, and now I am even wondering if I should have set the goal at $1,000.00 instead of $500.00. In any case, we have collected $798.00 so far, and we will not end our campaign until June 19. There is still time to get the word out. I cannot thank you enough for helping us keep the memory of Blessed Bishop Michal Kozal alive for not only our family, but also for the people of Poland. Our ability to aid in the transfer of his relic to the Basilica of Saint John the Baptist in Krotoszyn is a gift that will profoundly affect generations upon generations. God bless each and everyone of you for your generosity.

With love and gratitude,

Jarek Kozal

My eyes were flooding with tears as I watched our goal being met this morning. Our campaign has not ended. If it is meant to be, we will still receive donations from family, friends, and individuals who believe in telling the story of Blessed Michal Kozal. I cannot thank you enough for your donations and for those of you who have shared our campaign on your own Facebook pages. If you have not shared our campaign yet, we encourage you to do so. These donations are so very much appreciated, and the more we collect the more we are able to do to keep his memory alive by providing a beautiful, safe, peaceful, and sacred place for people to give thanks for the love that Blessed Michal Kozal showed for his parishioners, his church, and his nation.
Thank you again for continuing this campaign by spreading our endeavor far and wide.

With love and gratitude,

Jarek Kozal
