Warm Hugs is a nonprofit organization which mission is to provide a blanket to every Hispanic child in need in the Dayton/Cincinnati area in Ohio and the Rio Grande Valley area in Texas. Warm Hugs was established in 2016 by Cecille Figueroa Narvaez and Dasha Peñas Johnson and have already distributed close to 1,000 blankets. Last year, in hopes of helping more people, we decided to send part of the funds to Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas so they could purchase blankets for children receiving services at their facilities.
It is heartbreaking to see human beings cold and frightened while lying down in thin mattresses waiting to be transferred from the detention center to a refuge center. This is why we have partnered with Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas which is one of the centers that provides services to the refugees after they are released from the detention center. Our main goal is to provide a warm hug through a cozy, warm blanket to every Hispanic child in need. However, the logistics of organizing a blanket drive and sending these to Texas is more complicated and costly than sending the funds and having CCRGV buy the blankets directly. Therefore, we have decided to start a GoFundMe Campaign- Blankets for Detained Children in order to raise funds that will be sent to Catholic Charities and they will provide Warm Hug blankets to the refugees.
The average cost of a blanket is $6.00, so a simple minimal donation will provide a cozy blanket that will not only keep a child warm but will also symbolically give him/her a warm hug and comfort them. Today, there are more than 1,500 children in shelter facilities in Texas, and as they wait to go home, you can help spreading the love and provide a warm hug that will make them feel welcomed to this country. Whether they are here permanently or end up being sent to their home country, they deserve to be treated with love and respect.
