On Monday night (September 23, 2019) Blake complained of a headache, vomited, had a seizure, and then became unresponsive. He was taken via ambulance to Northwestern Huntley Hospital where they determined he had a brain bleed. He was intubated and Flight for Life transported Blake to Lurie Children’s Hospital. A team of neurosurgeon’s met him at the hospital to assess his situation. They immediately performed a scan and determined that Blake needed an intracranial shunt to remove blood and cerebrospinal fluid and reduce his intracranial pressure. He was started on medications to stop the seizures and he was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit. The doctors explained that Blake had an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) that hemorrhaged in the left occipital lobe of his brain. AVM is a congenital condition in which an abnormal cluster of vessels in which an artery shunts directly into a vein instead of going through a bed of capillaries. Blake had not shown any symptoms prior to this date and we did not know that he had this condition.

He has undergone CT scans and MRI’s. An angiogram was performed and an embolization procedure was completed. Blake remained heavily sedated over the course of the next several days and on a ventilator. His team of physicians and nurses continued to closely monitor and care for him. He may need to undergo another procedure to remove the AVM.

Blake has amazed us all with his progress each day. He is off the ventilator and breathing on his own. He is now showing good movement of all extremities. He is alert more and more with each passing day. He is not yet talking but he communicates with us in his own way. We are grateful to see him smile from time to time. He has given us a thumbs up, is able to pass an object from one hand to another, and snapped his fingers.

They had transferred him out of the ICU to the medical floor. Today he was transferred back to the ICU because he developed an infection.

We hope and pray that Blake recovers fully with minimal to no deficits. The road ahead will be long and require a lot of support, prayer, and rehabilitation. Please keep Blake, Tyler, Jennie, and Andy in your thoughts and prayers.
