John Aga has been a member of the Black Hills music scene for over 50 years. Over the decades, he has always been quick to play benefit shows for those in need, never asking for or expecting anything in return. Now John needs our community's help.
After months of struggling with debilitating symptoms, John was misdiagnosed with glioblastoma at Rapid City Regional Hospital in June 2018, given two weeks to live, and sent to hospice to spend his remaining days. In the coming days, he slowly lost his ability to walk, use his left arm, or even sit up unassisted. He did not, however, die in two weeks. Or even two months. Finally convinced that he was not going to die, he requested more tests and was diagnosed with CNS lymphoma. He was transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester in August 2018, where he has received 9 rounds of chemo and is facing more. Since arriving in MN, he has also been diagnosed with a heart condition that will require surgery. His spirits are good most days though and if ever there was a fighter, John certainly is one. He is working hard to regain the ability to walk and is very excited at the prospect of returning to the Black Hills in between chemo treatments.
John has been unable to work for nearly a year and his savings have been depleted. Although his treatment at the Mayo Clinic has been covered by Medicare, the two months prior that he spent in hospice were not and future rehabilitation costs are still pending. In addition to mounting medical bills, there will soon be travel costs back and forth to Rochester after he is released.
