Cardiac Surgery for Tiny

On Thanksgiving Day this year we welcomed a litter of five Great Pyrenees puppies. This past  week I took them to the vet to get their shots, wormings, and checkups.

Puppy #5 that we call “Tiny” was diagnosed with a PDA: a Patent Ductus Arteriosis. It’s a condition where the chambers of the heart didn’t close up as they should have and had left him with a hole in his heart. The only way to fix it is cardiac surgery. Without it, I was told by the vet that he would have a low quality of life where he is always tired. When you hear about premature babies with homes in their heart, this is actually one of the things that they’re talking about. Just for whatever reason, hisblittle heart didn’t close of the aorta and divide the chambers as it should have.

Tiny is a really sweet little puppy. He likes to chew on his Nylabones and rope toys, but he can’t romp, and run and play with the others due to his condition. He is the most relaxed puppy that you’ve ever met. We had actually had him sold but when we found out about this condition, it just wasn’t right to let him go to a new home with something like this. That’s a lot to handle, especially when welcoming a new puppy to your home. So we’re looking for other avenues to help take care of this situation.

The vet said that he will need a workup from the veterinary hospital at Virginia Tech, and then surgery to fix this. 

Frankly, I wasn’t prepared for something so extensive. I’m hoping to raise the money here. I understand that not everyone can do something and that’s okay. I am currently trying to find a rescue that can possibly help in the event that I can’t raise the funds. Whatever I raise here will either go towards his treatment while he is with us and then we’ll find him a home after he is healed, or if I can’t raise the complete funds, then whatever is donated here will be given to whatever rescue winds up helping us so they can take care of it.
