Distant Hearts: Mikey's Passport

“Long distance relationships are challenging. Much of the joy that we find in our relationships comes from the activities we can do together in person.

When you’re living in another state or country, though, you cannot share these activities with the person you love. You can’t gaze into one another’s eyes and enjoy the pleasures of physical contact, or even share the simple joy of one another’s presence.”

My name is Kerry, I’m 22 and live in the UK. My boyfriend’s name is Mikey, he’s 30 and lives in the U.S. We’ve been in a relationship for just over 2 years now and have been long distance the entire time we’ve known each other. 2 years of living 4667 miles and a 6 hour time difference apart.

The reason for this gofundme:

We are starting this campaign to try raise roughly $1600 owed to the United States that came in the form of a repatriation loan.

Back in 2010, Mikey moved to Australia to live with his then girlfriend. Over time the relationship broke down and in 2013 she left him stranded with no home and no money. A requirement of his visa was that he wasn’t allowed to work. As a result the only way he could make it back to the United States was through the U.S Repatriation Program (more details about the program here . All temporary assistance provided under the Repatriation Program is in the form of a loan. This loan was enough for Mikey to purchase a plane ticket home, upon his arrival his passport was made void until the loan could be paid off.

Mikey started to rebuild his life, he got a job and an apartment. A week before Christmas that same year, the company he was working for made his whole department redundant. He was forced to move and the money that was being saved to pay of the repatriation loan was used to support himself in a multi-share apartment while trying to find work.

From there, it continued to get worse. Mikey had to move again, this time to another state in order to help is mother. He now lives in a very secluded area where there is no choice for work. The closest town is too far away to walk to. To help with the household bills, Mikey has been doing odd jobs for neighbours but with so many people in similar situations these are hard to come by.

I help out where I can while still paying my own bills, rent and saving for trips. So far I’ve managed to scrape together enough money to visit him twice in the past 2 years but things will be a lot harder since I got new work.

I’m not expecting miracles. Times are hard. We’ve been long distance for 2 years and it’s time we tried to close it. I want Mikey to be able to travel to the UK so he can meet my family and friends, family means so much to both of us. To show him my favourite places would simply be amazing.

In the future, which I hope is sooner rather than later, we want to get married and start a family which means one of moving countries. Whichever one of us it is, it would be nice to have to option for either of us to do it. If we can’t pay this loan off it could take us years to start the process to finally close this distance. All we really want it to be together, we’re both working hard we just need a little bit of help.

If we manage to raise this money it would mean the world to us.
