Its Nancy verses H1N1
In the fall of 2014, Nancy obtained her flu shot. Shortly after, she started not feeling well. Headaches, body aches and eventually she became ill with pneumonia. This too became complicated when it was discovered that it began from H1N1 and was necrotizing pneumonia and destroying her lungs. Nancy soon began the battle for her life and did not even know the most of it because she was put into a coma on Christmas Eve of 2014.
Nancy was rushed to the hospital when her son went for a visit and found her unable to breath. She was taken from nearest hospital and then moved to a bigger facility. She was then quickly sent via helicopter to the U of M hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan. Nancy was admitted to special Intensive Care for several months. She had to be intubated due to her low oxygen levels, thus eventually put into a coma during that time. A tracheotomy was eventually put in place. Nancy’s lungs have collapsed multiple times to the point that she had to have a procedure that fused her lungs to the inside of her chest. Due to this procedure as well as the ongoing infections, Nancy is not a viable candidate for lung transplant. A year ago she was outside looking at fairy houses with her grandkids, now, she has to live with the oxygen assisting her 24/7 and can't walk out the door.
Nancy has been in and out of the hospital (mostly in) for a year now. Due to her tracheotomy and the complications with the lungs collapsing, she is also now deaf in one of her ears. She was unable to speak for a period not being able to communicate to her family and friends other than through pen and paper. Talking is still difficult. Nancy has fought hard through therapy to be able to speak and move the limbs that were also affected. Walking to the kitchen is now a thing of the past. Standing and looking in the mirror to brush her hair has not happened in a year. Although her family rejoiced and tears have overflowed, her grandchildren and kids are saddened that she has drastically changed and unable to do the things she did just one year ago. Nancy cannot walk any longer and has to use either a wheelchair or a walker to help her stand and move ‘very’ short distances. The Dr’s have told us she is a true fighter because no one they know of has survived the trifecta she has.
Nancy, has now had to face another huge struggle, how to pay for the massive expenses that she is facing. The medical bills, prescription bills, transportation bills and worries continue to grow. Nancy is still in very ill and will not get better.
Nancy has had to adjust and overcome one last battle, the one where she had to tell her loved ones there would be no longer a road to recovery, only one of daily survival.
Nancy needs help. She needs many little and some big things that just are not being covered. From rails for her bathtub so we can help her into the shower to a ramp for the front door so she can get to and from the doctors without the anxiety of the knowing she has to go out the door. Due to the financial hardships the last year, food is scarce and the cupboards are bare. The entire family has been trying to help get her the medications, supplements and treatments she needs and put themselves on the back burner.
