Ms. Cooley's Biology Classroom Fund

Gandhi once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. My name is Brooke Cooley and I moved from Texas to Bridgeport, CT to teach inner-city kids. I will be teaching Biology and Environmental Science at Bassick High School. Bassick High School is ranked one of the lowest performing schools in CT (placed at 154 out of 157). I strongly agree with Nelson Mandala, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.
My goal is for my classroom to be a safe, FUN, happy learning environment. A place where my students can come out of the world and have fun learning. Over 30% of Bridgeport's youngest residents live below the poverty line and the schools reflect this. Many of my students live in public housing or shelters and don’t have a place to call their own. I want my classroom to be theirs. Due to the low income district I'm teaching in, 100% of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch programs. Because of this, I need to reach outside the community for funding. I know there is no way to raise enough money to buy functioning lab tables, but we can purchase paint and cover up the curse words, gang signs and grafitti. Through the generosity of others and lots of hard work, we can improve this classroom and in the process give each student a better chance of success. George Washington Carver once said, “Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom.”
I desperately need your help with buying supplies for my classroom. My students and I would like to spend this year making our classroom a happy, safe and loving environment. The joy of learning and participating is overshadowed by broken lab tables and cabinets, graffiti, hot humid air, old chalk boards with no projector or smart board capabilities, and the over daunting task of teaching biology labs with no lab supplies.
We need lots of paint (we are going to paint murals on our broken lab tables), paint brushes, plywood (to board up the broken cabinets and paint Earth Day murals on), a small window air conditioner, a dry erase board and markers, a projector or smart board, student journals, lab supplies, lots and lots green plants to hang from the ceiling, post-it easel pads, poster markers, cleaning supplies, scholar dollar awards (little rewards for good grades, behavior, and attendance), and normal back to school supplies for my students.
Thank you so much for giving whatever you can.
