Biogas Solutions for Climate Change & Poverty
As the Executive Director of New-Age Environmental Development of Africa (NED Africa; www.nedafrica.com), a social enterprise based in Ghana, West Africa, I am thrilled to announce this campaign to raise $95,156 in start-up capital for the establishment of a community-based biogas production company which will convert human, animal, and food waste into biogas and fertilizer to be sold on the commercial market.

Biogas is a renewable energy source consisting of a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas can be produced from a variety of raw materials. Biogas can be used as fuel in cars, electricity, and for any heating purposes such as cooking on gas stoves.
Our biogas production plant will primarily use human, animal, and food waste collected from 10 neighboring rural villages (a combined population of approximately 50,000) in Hohoe District, Volta Region, Ghana and across the border in Togo, where we will set up public toilet facilities.
This zone of 10 villages is a critical area to target the biogas plant, as it contains important natural resources and landmarks that require intensive conservation efforts. The zone includes the Wli Agumatsa cascade waterfalls, the highest in West Africa, and the surrounding rivers and water systems that thousands of communities depend on for drinking water. The zone also includes Mount Afadjato, the highest peak in Ghana, and in its valley below, a rehabilitated tropical forest reserve thanks to the millions of trees planted by NED Africa over the past 20 years.
Most of the communities in this region have no toilets and people are forced to use bushes, contaminating local water bodies and negatively impacting public health. Our biogas company will address three of the most critical problems facing rural communities right now:
1. Reduce cholera and other waterborne diseases.
With the implementation of public toilets throughout the 10 villages within the zone, human waste will no longer go in rivers and other water bodies that people use as drinking water, reducing the transmission of waterborne diseases which cause many needless deaths every year. Furthermore, proceeds from biogas sales will fund NED Africa’s clean water program, installing potable water supply systems to communities in need in Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
2. Reduce illegal logging.
People will use biogas for cooking rather than firewood, sparing trees in the forest reserve. We will offer biogas at a subsidized price to rural communities, making it so affordable that people will be disincentivized to go into the reserve to cut trees for firewood. Furthermore, proceeds from biogas sales will fund NED Africa’s tropical forest restoration program which aims to plant and preserve 25 million trees across Ghana, Togo, and Benin by 2025. Given the critical role that tropical forests play in reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere, our biogas production company will do its part to address climate change.
3. Create income.
Local people will be earning money from their own waste! Our company will create an array of well-paying, full-time and part-time jobs. Additionally, proceeds from biogas sales will fund our ‘block chain’ micro loan system. As part of our intensive entrepreneurship training program, we will offer interest-free loans to groups of individuals living in the zone of 10 villages or in other rural communities for the purposes of starting sustainable businesses. In particular, we will target individuals who make their revenue directly from the forest reserves, such as charcoal makers and chainsaw operators, for training in other trades that do not depend on forest resources or that do so sustainably.
Biogas Sales
We’ll sell both the biogas and the fertilizer in local, regional, and national markets in Ghana and Togo. Because of the huge daily yields we expect, we’ll be able to offer both the biogas and fertilizer at prices below our competitors’ rates, enabling us to corner the markets. We’ll also offer mobile delivery service to vehicles, an important niche given the increasingly regulated gas market in Ghana that has shut down many facilities recently.
Start-up Capital
We aim to raise a total of $95,156 USD to cover all start-up costs for our biogas production company. This will cover the cost of the complete biogas plant and shipping ($65,156), the land for the plant site ($5,000), buildings for the plant ($8,000), setting up the toilet systems in neighboring villages ($5,000), a sewage truck to collect and deliver waste to the plant ($10,000) and initial operational expenses ($2,000). For any investor interested in investing by purchasing the plant directly from the manufacturing company, that option is available.
Once we’re up and running, our ongoing operational expenses will be low, as we will produce the gas needed to power our facilities, leaving us with a high profit margin.
Benefitting Our Communities and Our Planet
Our biogas production company will critically benefit thousands of rural communities in Ghana, Togo, and Benin, the environment, and the atmosphere. In addition to preventing water contamination by human and animal waste, reducing tropical deforestation and CO2 levels in the atmosphere, and providing sustainable sources of fuel and income for local people, biogas is a renewable energy source that generates no net carbon dioxide. It will even serve as a source of renewable energy subsidies.

This Biogas System can produce 140 cubic meters (m3) of biogas from 2,331 kilograms (kg) of human manure DAILY.
1. The Biogas System is a Do It Yourself (DIY) Biogas System for convenient transport and easy assembly.
2. It comes in wood boxes. It is surface mounted, except the waste collection tank, there is no need for digging and/or heavy construction. It can be assembled by the client itself.
3. This System is a high efficient biogas system with hollow sunlight sheet green house and pad for insulation and heating, heating system that can use the waste heat from the electricity generator to heat the digester, and circulating pumps for raw material and anaerobic digestate mixing.
4. The Biogas System is designed mainly for livestock farm manure and waste water treatment, for slaughterhouse solid wastes and waste water treatment, and for municipal sludge or food waste treatment.
5. The system is mainly composed of a waste collection tank, several first stage digesters, a control room, several second stage digesters, a desulfurizing tower, and a dehydrating tower and a biogas booster pump. The digester is composed of a green house made with hollow sunlight sheet and metal supporting frame, a membrane digester with a gas storage bag combined in one, a stainless steel sink, a stainless steel outlet. The membrane of the digester has the characteristics of anti-aging, acid and alkali resistant and rodent resistance. A single digester has a volume from 60 to 1000m3.
