I am an ex-firefighter/fire chief out of New Jersey and Central Florida.  My wife and I own a home on Bimini, Bahamas at Bimini Bay.  We bought it in 2008 as a retirement home.  Since my retirement in 2013 we spend about 4-5 months out of the year living on the Island and we have come to love the Island.  Biminites are some of the most friendly Bahamians that we have met.  Being a firefighter i always look at safety and Bimini has no fire protection.  Whenn we first started going Bimini had a old broken down rusted engine.  Then when a piece of fire protection showed up it was nothing more then a pick up truck with a pump.  Shortly after its arrivals the building burned and took the truck with it.  Since then the only thing the island has is a golf cart with a pump and some hose.

This past June my wife and I were on the island and noticed heavy black smoke going from the government dock.  We made our way over to it and long behold the mailboat, which brings supplies from Nassau, was burning. There was nothing anyone could do, but whatch it burn freely.  As firefighters do I took pictures and posted them to my Facebook page.  That stared the conversation from my firefighter friends as to where is the fire equipment.  To which I replied “we do not have any”.   That started the campaign.  Tim Neidert, a firefighter friend, said I think I can get a fire engine donated, but we are going to need to get funds to equip it.

This campaign will be used to equip the engine.  Equipment such as hose, bunker gear, nozzles, breathing apparatus, tools, etc.  We also might needs funds for fire engine mechanics to go through it as well as shipping to the island and lastly any training that will be needed for local Biminites.

On November 16th, 2018, Bimini Engine 1 was officially signed over to the Bimini Cat Cay District Council. The Engine was in a motorcade/parade from the entrance to Resorts World to the Administration complex in Alice Town. It was an extremely humbling experience. Next, we will be bringing Florida Fire Instructors to Bimini starting November 30th to train local volunteers as well as EMS Instructors for island wide CPR training

We’re here! Bimini Engine 1 has made the crossing from the US to Bimini thanks to SEACOR Island Lines. She’s been unloaded and has taken a bath to remove the salt water. Bahamian Customs cleared her quickly and easily. Next up, the rest of the team will be moving in on Wednesday thanks to donated tickets from Tropic Ocean Airways. Then we will start unloading all the gear and setting it up. On Friday, November 16th, a motorcade with the engine will start at the entrance of Bimini Bay at approximately 10am and continue down to the Admintration Complex where there will be a dedication, blessing and signing over ceremony. Time to celebrate and have some fun. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

It’s been a busy time getting Bimini Engine 1 finished and readied for shipping so updates have been tough to get done. I apologize for that. Here is the latest. Engine 1 was delivered to SEACOR this past Thursday. SEACOR has donated all the shipping costs. We got a lot of interesting looks as we drove down I95 from Palm Bay to Ft Lauderdale, it certainly has the look and feel of Bimini and not the traditional fire engine we are all used to. The engine is fully loaded with all the necessary equipment to fight fires. THANKS to all cash donors here and the numerous Florida fire departments that got involved. We plan on Engine 1 hitting Bimini’s shore November 10th. Some of our team is headed over November 10th and rest will arrive November 14th. The team will then prep the engine for presentation. If anyone is on Bimini at that time please come by and see us at the north beach area. I believe there will be some kind of Junkanoo parade, signing over ceremony and a blessing on November 16th or 17th.

We are now moving into part 2 of phase 1. It will involves signing the engine over to Bimini’s local government, firefighter/EMS training to the local Biminites who signed up as volunteers and island wide CPR training and ACLS recertification to those who need it. The training team met in Davenport, FL this past week to iron out logistics and the syllabus. Instructors will hit the ground on November 30th and all training (fire and CPR) will start December 1st at the Hilton at Resorts World. The Hilton will be donating all the rooms for the instructors, training rooms and food. A BIG THANKS to Resorts World.
