"Faith, it's an Uncertain World Entirely"
-Peter Blood

My name is Bill Messner-Loebs and my wife is Nadine. I was the writer on the Flash, Wonder Woman, the Batman Newspaper strip, the Maxx and Epicurus the Sage, and writer-artist for a series called Journey, the Adventures of Wolverine MacAlistaire. I am 69 years old and my wife is 80.
We lost our home in August of last year. There was a gas leak and the little, aging trailer was condemned by the county. We tried to buy another trailer or a regular house, but our credit score was pretty dismal and as we went from house to house and park to park, each time they pulled the score it lowered. Our bank won't give a mortgage on less than $85,000 and our credit score won't support that. My career writing comics sort of petered out in the late Nineties. I've been working as a delivery person for Panera Bread and as a fill-in janitor for my local church, plus doing sketches and covers at local conventions. Those things, plus Social Security, kept our heads above water. Then the gas leak drove us to try living in our car.  My wife had open heart surgery a couple of years ago and cataract surgery, plus therapy on her knees so she can continue to walk at all. She is in constant pain. Past, present and future medical bills loom pretty large. This Winter we moved into a homeless shelter run by our local churches. Since our story appeared on Fox2 News I've gotten offers to do more artwork, but with two jobs it's hard to find the time.  And search for a house. Livingston County doesn't have much affordable housing, but we are trying to stay within commuting range of Brighton, Michigan since this is where my jobs are, our friends, churches and doctors are. We have been trying to pay off past debts to raise our credit score, but that could take years. It looks like we will have to buy a house outright if we can find one reasonable enough, or one with a land contract. We're afraid to take temporary housing, that will exhaust what little savings we have and those saving, we just discovered, make us ineligible for state housing vouchers.
But people have been kind and helpful. I have the offer to script a series called "Cadaverman" and a couple of other independent comics, but they are months from becoming established. I would be able to be more productive if the housing situation were more stable. Which it's not.

As you can see I've upped my goal. After we got back into town from the two conventions we went to in Pennsylvania and Traverse City, I took Nadine to a number of medical tests, revolving around the persistent Afib she's been experiencing. Aside from being weaker she's doing all right. But I need to get her into more stable housing. We spent the last week re-calling places and visiting houses and apartment complexes. We still haven't gotten the credit scores where we need them to be. So it's obvious to me we'll have to buy a place outright. I'm going to see if taking this campaign to Facebook and twitter will get us ahead faster. You guys have been great to us. I think I've just been too casual about it all.

So I went to the podiatrist yesterday. He says the pain in my foot is arthritis and strained tendons, and that my shoes encourage my foot and toes side-wise. I ordered special shoes that have insets and molded interiors and stuff. They should arrive in about a month. I asked him about continuing to work, especially as a janitor, since I walk about 6 hours a day. Good for weight reduction though. He says I have to make up my own mind, but the foot will never really heal unless I rest the leg. Hmmm. Have you noticed that when you reach a certain age the news is all medical?
By the way Nadine visits her Cardio Pulmenologist tomorrow. Hopefully good news.
And there's more good news on the Cadaver Man front. The first issue is being lettered and on its way to Image, so we'll see way they say. More soon!!

So the good news is I didn't break my foot. It just felt like it. I can buy new, non-slip shoes through Panera and for one reason or another the shoes were delayed. I had been wearing the shoes for a year and half, so I figured I had plenty of time, even though I was getting aches and strains in one foot. When the shoes arrived at last I found them a little tight. I started to develop blisters. So I switched back to the old shoes to let the blisters deflate. One the second day the foot was really painful. I stepped off the curb and got a blast of pain like I had never felt. The emergency room doctors think I may have strained a tendon inside my foot. I got a brand new surgical boot and a follow up appointment. It turns out the boot isn't non-slip. At the first contact with water I skidded against the dishwasher and twisted my spine. How was your week?

Hey all! It's so gratifying to have friends so willing to help. Nadine is doing better. She is sleeping well, most of the day and night, but she continues to have angina and her doctors can't find a cause. We're visiting a specialist tomorrow and another one on the 11th, so we may learn somethig. I just finished scripting the first issue of Cadaver Man. I'm continuing to work at Panara and my church. We've visited a couple of places, but nothing we can work with. Once we get a handle on Nadine's health it'll be easier to concentrate. Thanks again for everything.
