Bill Pitsenbarger (William Hart Pitsenbarger) was a United States Air Force Pararescueman who gave his live aiding and defending a unit of soldiers pinned down by an enemy assault in Vietnam.  He earned the Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross, Airman's Medal, Purple Heart,  and Air Medal.

Although it happened more than 35 years ago a group of Army veterans of the Vietnam War still consider this enlistee the bravest and most courageous person they have ever known Per Martin Kroah Jr. who served two tours in Viet Nam,  Charles Epperson of Paris Mo, Fred Navarro of San Antonio, TX, F David Peters of Alliance OH, John W Libs of Evansville, IN, Phillip J Hall of Palmyra, WI and others who have stories they shared.

Bill voluntarily left the relative safety of a helicopter to descend into a brutal jungle battle to treat and evacuate wounded soldiers in 1966.  Pitsenbarger was credited with saving nine lives after several times refusing to be rescued himself during a fight where 106 of the 134 troopers were wounded or died.    Before leaving the  battle area the helicopter pilot Harold D Salem of Mesa Arizona signaled to Bill to come aboard to safety but Bill  waved off the helicopter when it also became nearly disabled.  Bill exposed himself on three separate occasions to extreme enemy fire situations and had total disregard for his own safety.  At the end the VC launched a final attack and Bill was killed by enemy fire. Henry J. OBierne of Huntsville, ALA recovered his body.
Henry said he was an ordinary man who did extraordinary things.

There is so much more to his story. Internet has extensive detail.   Bill Pitsenbarger is buried in Covington Ohio at the Miami Memorial Park cemetery where there is a highway national monument but no Memorial to him near his gravesite.  We want to place a memorial to Bill Pitsenbarger and are seeking money to build a proper memorial to him.

Miami Memorial Park has set up an account and or you can send a check to Miami Memorial Park 7875 N Crescent Dr, Covington, OH 45318 .  In the notation place Bill Pitsenbarger name or account number 1221120411623 Unity Bank 215 N. Wayne St.,Piqua Ohio

He was my grandfather Isaac Pitsenbarger's nephew and has been an inspiring story in my family. Thank you for doing this.
