Hello family, friends, friends of friends, supporters of my art,
As most of you know I left a PhD program in history last October. Since then I have been a full time stay at home mom who is actively trying to make a living in an alt-academic career. The reason I am posting a go fund me page is because there are health related financial obstacles that are making it difficult to achieve any short to long term sustainable success and income.
The major obstacle I am facing is my monthly health insurance bill. My premium is $316.00 a month. I am able to continue the amazing coverage the University of Michigan provides for its history PhD students as long as I pay the COBRA premium. Recently I have found myself in the position of having a very hard time paying this bill and truthfully, I would never have posted this go fund me if I had any viable options left. I am feeling a deep sense of shame and embarrassment having to ask for help. However, I have several chronic conditions including diabetes, and chronic pain. I also have severe diastasis recti and a hernia. Therefore, I am determined to keep my cobra coverage until it runs out in early 2019 because it has no deductible and will cover the extensive surgeries I need in order to be active again.
I have managed to cover my monthly premium until now by focusing on art commissions. However, these commissions take up all of my time. For the past six months I have found myself only doing commissions and making no progress on my short term goal of setting up an etsy shop, an online presence, and a patreon page. If I could get a hand up, and move beyond struggling every month to pay that premium I have no doubt that I can create a sustainable source of income because I won’t be spending my working time on one time commissions. My long term goal is to research, write, illustrate, and publish Cayuga language children’s books with my mother who is a 2nd language learner, and my grandmother who is one of only a few hundred fluent speakers left.
The cost you see breaks down in the following way:
Health Insurance Premium June 2018 = $316.00
Health Insurance Premium July 2018 = $316.00
Health Insurance Premium August 2018 = $316.00
Health Insurance Premium September 2018 = $316.00
Health Insurance Premium October 2018 = $316.00
Total need = $1580
Emergent need*** $316 due in 12 days or I will lose my coverage completely.
I never wanted to do this without offering something in exchange and therefore I would like to do the following: When you donate, and if you’re comfortable losing your anonymity, send me an email with your name/mailing address, and you will be entered into a draw of several original pieces of art by yours truly.
