WHY: I am dedicated to helping students engage with history, both through accurate and detailed history games, and now expanding into video to help them visualize a different place and time. Understanding our history and learning to view events from multiple perspectives are essential skills if our children, and our country, are going to flourish.

TOPIC: What was life like for the Native American people who lived here before Europeans came? How did they experience first contact and early trading relationships? The French and the British approached local tribes in completely different ways, which largely shaped not only the French and Indian War, but also much of American history. Sadly, textbooks frequently neglect this topic, or teach it only from the European point of view.

WHAT: I’m creating a video series about the interactions between the Anishinaabe Nations (Three Fires Confederacy) and French Canadians from both points of view.*

For the videos, I’ll be interviewing Anishinaabe historians about the Ojibway and the Odawa's daily lives both before 1670, and after Europeans came to the Great Lakes region, focusing on the time of the French-Canadian fur trade (1670-1760). Then my videographer and I will head to the Straits of Mackinac to get footage of the region described - the land, lakes, and rivers -  to help students picture what life was like in that area. We’ll also visit the historic fort of Colonial Michilimackinac to see the European side of things.

STANDARDS: This project meets a variety of curriculum requirements for grades 3-5, including Native Americans, explorers, economics, and geography.

WHY VIDEO: I’ve surveyed 72 third-fifth grade teachers across the United States about what they need to make their social studies classes more engaging and effective. Here’s a sample of what they’ve asked for:

 - “Short videos of visual representations of the geography and way of life in different regions.  It is very difficult for my students who have never left the state to picture other places.”- Bonnie from Colorado

 - “My students are so visual and the resources we have are so strongly driven by lectures that it's hard to fully convey the concepts to students.” - Katy from Michigan

 - “Challenging the common stories told from the European point of view... civilization did not  start once the native people were converted to Christianity and forced to abandon their lifestyles.  Also the nonsense that Columbus was the first one to "discover " America.  Also trying to keep it kid friendly/appropriate while giving accurate facts.” - Jen from Connecticut

 - “The resources we are provided are very Euro-centric and present the events of exploration, settlement, and Native American experience from only one perspective.  It is frustrating and short sighted, plus it is not culturally responsive, nor ethically responsible.” - Amy from Colorado

GOAL: My goal is to create accurate, detailed, and culturally respectful videos that help engage students.

WHO WILL IT HELP: While beneficial to all students, the videos would especially help inner-city and lower-income students who are less able to travel to other parts of the country.

FUNDS NEEDED: Hiring a professional production team (videographer and video editor) costs between $1400-$1800 a day. We need four days in Michigan for the filming. I’m trying to raise $7,000 to pay for this project. Can you please help?

TIMING:

We need the money by July 20, 2017.
Filming begins August 1, 2017.

HOW YOU CAN HELP: You can help in two ways.

1. Please share this with friends and family, and ask them to share it with their friends. Together, we can accomplish anything!

2. Please consider donating. Even a few dollars would make a difference.

- If you donate $25 or more (Silver Level), you’ll get free access to the videos, once they are published in September.

 - If you donate $100 or more (Gold Level), your name will be included in the end credits, and you’ll also receive a free DVD (along with my fulsome thanks!)

CONTACT ME: I’m happy to answer your questions! Just email me at [email editado].

Thank you for supporting this educational resource to help students and teachers. I really appreciate it!

*I am also writing some Time Travel games on this topic, so we can once again put the students in the driver’s seat on key decisions and consequences. :)
