Mountaineers, we need you.
For far too long West Virginia University, and West Virginia, has not been represented in the TBT basketball tournament. I want to change that. My name is John Flowers and I played for WVU and this great state of West Virginia from 2007-2011. During that time I had the honor of playing for Coach Bob Huggins, who instilled in us that we were not just playing for the school, but the entire state.
During that time, I learned - and valued - how important it was to represent the state the right way.
We played hard, left everything out on the floor, and tried to mirror the blue collar hard-working people of this state: From our coal miners to our school teachers, who wake up everyday and go out and give us their all. We knew the people of this great state deserved nothing less from us as we proudly took the court on national television with the state front-and-center on our jerseys.
The TBT - “The Basketball Tournament” - started 5 years ago. Teams are comprised of players of alumni from other schools, such as Notre Dame, Syracuse, Ohio State, and many more. The games are broadcast on ESPN. What better way to broadcast and represent our great state and WVU alumni, than to get all of the guys together and go out and fight hard for another championship? Many of our alumni, including many that were there for our final four run, are still playing. Whether it be overseas, in the G league, or in the NBA. Many of us still live in Morgantown, training in the summer at the practice facility.
Since the first year of the TBT, WVU fans have been wanting our alumni to come together and enter a team into the tournament, but due to circumstances we have not been able to come together and organize the team. This year, we have commited alumni players.
But we need your help to make it actually happen.
Here’s where we need your help. To make this possible, we are looking to raise $20,000. This will cover the cost of travel such as hotels, bus, and flights for players coming out of state for the exhibition games, practice and the first rounds of the TBT. It will also help to pay to make the exhibition games possible. Your generosity will also help us to get the uniforms and equipment needed for the tournament.
