Best for Ben - 54 mile homecoming

Donation protected
On Sunday 12th March 2017 we, Jonny & Matt, are running from Salisbury spinal unit to Ben’s home in Avening. The distance is 54 miles and the aim is to complete the distance over the course of a day.

The run is to celebrate Ben's return to his family home and  to highlight his need for ongoing care and support. There has been a huge effort and monies raised so far, all with the sole aim of getting Ben home to his family in Avening. Ben is now nearing the day he can come home thanks to overwhelming community support and fundraising. Our run will highlight the journey he is bravely making. Essentially a short distance but a huge, lifechanging step for Ben and the start of a new chapter for him and his family.

Many of you may already know Ben's  story. For those who don't here's a brief introduction:
Whilst on holiday in April 2016 with his partner Ella and young family Olivia (7) and Iris (2), Ben sustained life-changing injuries while playing in the swimming pool. He broke his neck in 3 places and as a result, suffered a massive amount of damage to his spinal cord. Ben is now coming to terms with living life as a tetraplegic (the complete or partial loss of use of all four limbs and torso).

Ben is now living in Salisbury Spinal Unit, and after numerous chest infections and months on a ventilator, he is able to breathe by himself, which is major step for somebody with Ben’s level of injury. He’s also well enough to spend time in a specialised wheelchair most days.

The accident has been life changing for all the family. Adapting to this new life will be challenging. Ben is a young and strong man who has a real determination to get home to Ella and the girls. There has already been a long road travelled and a huge fundraising effort to raise as much money as possible to create access to and extend their entire family home. With the money alreay raised the groundworks have started and the day Ben can finally come home is approaching.

When Ben does come home it is not the end of his journey. Ben will require specialist care. All the money raised so far has been put towards the building work required to get Ben home. What may not be obvious is the fact Ben will need ongoing care, support and rehabilitation. We’d like to raise awareness of this fact and to specifically start generating funds which will enable Ben to have access to regular physio, classes, holidays, activities and even something like a specialised home exercise bike or similar equipment.

Please donate what you can. If you are a business we are asking for you to ‘sponsor’ a mile for £100.  Our goal is to get each mile sponsored. A big task to raise £5400 but we believe it’s more than achievable.
