Becky’s 10k run for Alzheimer's Research UK

Dementia is the biggest cause of death in the UK, with 1 in 3 people developing dementia in their lifetime.
Alzheimer’s is the primary cause of dementia (over 70% of those diagnosed) and Vascular Dementia is the second.
On 1 September, I’m running the Wilne 10k for Alzheimer’s Research UK (ARUK) as my grandad is in the later stages of dementia, having been diagnosed with both Vascular Dementia AND Alzheimer’s.
Having lost my nanny three years ago, it has been incredibly upsetting to watch grandad not only suffer from a broken heart, but to lose the memories they made together. His decline is getting quicker and more pronounced every day and has rapidly advanced beyond forgetting names and what day it is.
Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia are cruel conditions that sentence sufferers to a long and degrading death sentence - robbing them bit by bit of their independence and the very essence of who they are.
Thankfully, grandad still has his sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye. I’m one of the lucky ones - he still knows who I am and welcomes me with a massive hug whenever I see him.
The money I raise will help continue the fantastic research already being carried out by ARUK so that preventative measures, or treatment, can be given to those diagnosed with the condition(s) in the future. ARUK’s Drug Discovery Alliance is working on 26 potential new treatments for dementia right now and there are over a dozen dementia treatments being tested in the final stages of clinical trials.
Please dig deep and donate what you can - I can’t put into words just how much this means to me. I can’t promise I’ll run the 10k in super quick time (especially if it’s a hot day!) but I’ll certainly give it 100%.
