Choosing Joy
on behalf of Kiel Mahaffy
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. – Romans 5:13

Becky and Kiel Mahaffy live in South Lyon, MI with their 5 yr old son Liam.  They are active members in their home and church communities. Becky, Kiel and Liam enjoy spending time outdoors, camping, traveling, kayaking and taking in all of life’s joys. Kiel is my (Michele Brinkert) younger brother.

The past two years have been very difficult for their immediate and extended families. Following the loss of their infant daughter in 2016, Becky was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2017. It was soon determined that Becky in fact had stage 4 breast cancer with metastasis to the liver.

Through much prayer and careful consideration, Becky and Kiel have felt led by God to fight the cancer naturally with a holistic approach allowing God to heal her through His creation.

Their medical journey has led them to the Hoxsey Biomedical
Clinic. This natural based clinic provides treatment through a specific diet and supplemental program. It requires cross-country travel for treatment and medical supplies. Additionally, Becky has been unable to work while fighting this cancer.

Our family has decided to choose joy through this trial and to trust God. Please give as you feel so moved to help alleviate medical, nutritional, supplemental, lodging and airfare costs.

Please keep Becky in your prayers of thanksgiving for a complete remission as well as for Kiel, Liam and extended family members.

I haven’t updated in awhile and wanted to fill everyone in. Around November my appetite started getting worse and there was less and less food I could eat, my pain was increasing and I wasn’t doing well. I started ozone therapy and that was helping with pain. And in November any numbers were going down. I do believe hoxsey was working but through much prayer and consideration both kiel and I and the hoxsey doctors believe it wasn’t working fast enough.

So we prayed and researched natural clinics (my body could not do chemo at the time. Deep down inside I believe it would take my life, just a feeling I had). So we came across CMN hospital, it had all the therapies I have already worked with or researched. They were doing the most treatments out of the other clinics I had researched. Among many others they do immunotherapy (better then us immuno) and stem cell therapy. Through prayer we felt like we were being lead here. Amazingly we had 39,400 in our savings from the fundraiser and go fund me. And the clinic was 39,000!! Totally a God thing. So we are on the third week of therapy down here in Mexico. Lots of ups and downs but with being stage 4 doctors completely expected it and are working hard to figure out issues and to do what we need to for healing. The staff and facility and even food has been amazing. So thank you to everyone who is donating. I will have to come back at some pointe through the year so that is why we increased the go fund me amount.

If you can’t give we are asking for prayers because prayer is stronger and more powerful the money and we are very grateful for any contribution and especially the prayers. We pray over anyone who gives and are extremely grateful!

To those that have been following our journey. Here is a little update. Radiation went well in October, I have very little back pain now, only stiff and pain If i over do it, so it’s still healing. It has been a long road. I have had on and off liver pain, and other pains in my body which have limited me mobility wise so I almost live in a chair. I started ozone therapy about a month ago and have been doing really well this last week. Pain is almost gone, nausea is much better and just able to think more clearly in general. There are still many emotional hard days which are to be expected but God is working. I don’t look at this journey and think I wish I wouldn’t have to go through it because I know God is growing and teaching us in ways we would never know otherwise. Even so there are still days that I want to yell and say ok Lord that’s enough but he’s always there, and he’s always been faithful and I know there is purpose and reason for it all. So now what’s the next steps? I just got my lab work done and liver enzymes are looking good, calcium is down (can raise with bone mets), hemoglobin is good and two out of three tumor markers have decreased. We plan on checking numbers again around Christmas and based on progress we will decide if we are going back to hoxsey in Jan or if we will be doing a month long clinic in Mexico. We believe hoxsey is working (natural treatments take longer, especially when it’s stage 4) but if it is not working fast enough then we feel the clinic would be the best choice. They do intensive alternative treatments high include hyperthermia, hyperbaric oxygen, ozone, stem cell, immunotherapy (not the same as US immunotherapy) and much more. If we see progress with hoxsey even if it’s slow we will stay the course, it will be a longer recovery but we believe God led us to hoxsey for a reason and if he is saying stay the course we will. We are praying diligently for direction and believe he will work through any choice we make, our steps and our days are already ordained by him! So we are continuing to ask for support and prayer, whatever anyone can give us. We are ready to do whatever God is calling us to and are ready to serve him in anyway possible but pray that he uses all this to prepare us for whatever that may be. I will not go without fighting and doing whatever I can and believe God will use it for his glory. So it’s not about us and what he’s doing in our lives it’s about him and what he is doing to firer his kingdom and how we can bring him glory!!

To everyone who has continued to donate, pray and support us through this journey we are extremely grateful to you all. We are extremely humbled by all the support and encouragement.

We wanted to update everyone because again we don’t want to do this journey alone and there is power in community and prayer.

We currently got some testing done. There were positives and negatives. First off with any natural treatment it takes time, it’s not overnight and it takes a lot of building your system up. With the being said the three tumors in my breast shrunk slightly. And my tumor markers although they did not go down (which isn’t uncommon after 3 months) they have slowed (sometimes you have to slow the cancer before you can kill it). They say they see more decrease at the 6 month mark. Other labs look good, starting a new supplement for bones and increase dose of other things.my doctors are very hopeful and are very pleased with all my results. We do not know if liver tumors are shrinking because we have tests from April not from June.

One thing we did find out through a ct is that I have a tumor pressing on my spine which is obviously a concern. I have had back pain since last summer which makes me belive that I have been stage 4 all along. So now we are speaking with a radiation oncologist about doing 10 rounds of radiation. We would obviously love not to have to go this route but when you are dealing with the spine the slow healing is not always preferable.

So we are asking for prayer. First off we believe in an all powerful God that can heal and we believe he could heal/ take away the pain in a minute. But we also believe in a God that knows better then we do. That he sees the big picture and that he is working all for the good of those who love him. We love him and we believe in his almighty power. So we are asking for specific prayers for either healing of my back pain before treatment (we know if back pain goes away then tumor is shrinking) it actually has gotten better over last few months. But we are also prayin if I am meant to do radiation to shrink my tumor to be manageable that God will protect from any more side effects and that it will not cause spreading only shrinking. And through it all we are praying continuously for God’s guidance, strength and for him to teach and grow us through this all because at the end of it all it all comes down to God and that’s all that matters!!

Thank you for all the prayers and support we will update soon with some great news!!
