Becca's Heart Journey
Becca is a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and beloved teacher. On Monday, December 30th, Becca was diagnosed with the flu. By Saturday she was not feeling any better and went to the ER. Her heart muscle was found to be extremely weakened.
Becca is currently sedated and on ECMO (a bedside heart bypass machine) in an effort to rest her heart and give it time to heal. She has had several surgeries and there have been some small signs of healing; however, if her heart is not able to recover, she will be placed on the list to receive a heart transplant.
So much is unknown, but one thing is certain - the road ahead will be long. Thankfully, the Navy has been a great support to Kevin and his insurance will cover a majority of the medical expenses. But we know that at times like this, people often feel inclined to help.
Any funds donated here will be used to support Becca and ease the burden of unexpected expenses (lots of trips between home and the hospital, extra trips to the airport to pick up traveling friends and family, babysitting for the kids, etc.). Any unused portion will eventually go to a charity/foundation to help support others in a similar circumstance.
Her medical journey can be followed on CaringBridge.
Donations can also be made to directly to Security Savings Bank under “Becca’s Donation Fund” c/o Kevin Van Batavia.
Please keep Becca, Kevin, Ben, and Amelia in your thoughts and prayers.
