When you are constantly aware of health and fitness you never expect to hear your physician to speak those words, " You have cancer".
Well it happened! Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, with over 233,000 cases diagnosed each year in the U.S. Not all prostate cancers are alike. Some are highly aggressive and require appropriate treatment. Other have a low risk of spreading and can be managed conservatively.
My diagnosis can be managed conservatively. Herein lies my dilemma. There are basically six options for treating prostate cancer. Most of the options would have possible negative effects on my life.
Being a certified group fitness and Spinning instructor and also a Licensed Massage Therapist, my livelihood depends on staying fit and active. My oncologist has also helped me rule out certain options.
HIFU is my option. High Intensity Focused Ultrasound is a precise, non- invasive, prostate therapy that delivers controlled thermal energy through a rectal ultrasound probe to precisely destroy prostate tissue. HIFU is an outpatient procedure that takes 2-4 hours to complete. With HIFU, men are able to quickly return to normal activities.
HIFU enables very precise prostate ablation with nominal effect on other nearby structures. HIFU's excellent outcomes, quick recovery and minimal risk of side effects has made it the treatment of choice for more than 50,000 men in countries across the globe.
The problem and need: High Intensity Ultrasound
Focus was just approved in the USA this year and insurance companies are Not Yet paying for the procedure. Talking with insurance specialists, I have been told that will will probably be 1-2 years before HIFU is covered by insurance.
Time limit: My oncologist says I should not wait more than three months before having treatment for my prostate cancer.
Why gofundme? The cost of HIFU is $25,000 of which insurance will not cover anything. My husband and I started a new business two years ago, which he runs. We used all we had to start the business and as most people know it takes several years before most businesses see a return.
We are living on my income and the fitness instuctor/ LMT income doesn't give much wiggle room.
