SAGA Kids is an organization founded in 2018 and based in Cazenovia, NY to serve the LGBTQIA+ youth community in rural areas of Central New York.
I started this organization after going through the transformative experience of having my child come out to me as transgender. It opened my eyes to the struggles that young people in rural areas face as members of the LGBT community.
Our mission statement:
Encourage, empower, and elevate LGBTQIA+ youth in rural areas by providing them and their allies with resources and safe gathering spaces as well as offering education to the community around them to increase understanding and awareness, ensuring the support and acceptance of the adults in their lives, and pushing us forward to becoming a community where LGBTQIA+ kids grow up on an even playing field with their peers.
SAGA Kids currently offers the following services to LGBT+ youth:
-Biweekly youth support groups in Cazenovia, NY providing a safe space for LGBT youth and their allies
-Adult advocate to meet with kids and their parents/caregivers to facilitate and foster an open and more understanding relationship
-Provide handouts and flyers to help educate communities on LGBT+ issues
-Twice annual LGBT+ focused sex education classes done in collaboration with Planned Parenthood
-Workshops for youth to learn about safe binding, makeup tips, and life skills to be comfortable and confident in their own skin regardless of gender identity
-Peer to Peer mentoring programs to foster and encourage a healthy support system
SAGA Kids is working to soon offer the following services to LGBT+ youth:
-Biweekly youth support groups in neighboring communities
-Parent/Ally support groups
-Transgender seminars led by medical professions in the area
-Self-harm coping mechanism workshop for teens
-Parent seminar on identifying and supporting a teen through self-harm
How your donations will help us:
-Becoming incorporated and 501c3 certified
-Administrative and printing costs
-Youth Support Group activities such as fundraisers and community service
-Community outreach and education
-Collaboration with other local non-profits including BRIDGES
