Greek Fires

Donation protected
You are probably all aware of the deadly wildfires that burned everything in my hometown in Greece about a month ago. As of 12 September, 99 people were confirmed dead. The fires were the second-deadliest wildfire in the 21st century, after the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires in Australia that killed 180.

Over 700 residents have been evacuated or rescued, mainly from the seaside village of Mati, where rescuers found 26 corpses trapped just metres away from the sea, hugging each other as they died. Boats also recovered corpses from the water, and rescued hundreds of people from beaches and the sea. Ten people drowned when the boat rescuing them from a hotel in Mati capsized. Μore than 4,000 people were affected by the wilfires.

Greece deployed its entire fleet of fire-fighting aircraft and more than 250 fire engines, as well as over 600 firefighters. The Greek prime minister declared a state of emergency in Attica, and announced a three-day period of national mourning, stating in a televised address, "The country is going through an unspeakable tragedy".

Many of the people I personally know either lost their families, friends or houses. And unfortunately the tragedy is not yet over. Most of these people also now suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders and have mental health problems to deal with.

I have decided to set up this fundraising page to help those affected. All donations will be sent directly to families affected.

Thank you for your support!
