BareBones Puppets 25th Anniversary

BareBones Halloween Show Fundraising Blast:  $5000

BareBones Productions Mission:  “To bring art into community and community into art through movement, puppetry and spectacle performance; creative re-use, education, and collaboration.”
It’s our 25th anniversary!

BareBones is in the process of consciously educating and transforming its internal culture of creation and production to become a space that is welcoming of all community members who wish to join. We recognize that, historically and currently, the main demographic of staff and community has been White / European-American.  We recognize that each one of us has certain “intrinsic biases”... that is, opinions that are part of our perspective, that we may not be conscious of, yet filter through our actions, words, and relationships. Our ways of organizing, creating, and relating to each other are informed by the cultures and the identities and experiences we come from.  We have inherited and absorbed toxic patterns of oppression, including racism, sexism, homophobia, classism, and more. These patterns show up whether we are aware of them or not. We continue to pass these along, until we consciously transmute them and create agreements and understandings with each other. We want everyone who makes art with us to feel welcomed and safe.   Each of the following six initiatives is part of an overall drive to actively educate ourselves about patterns of oppression at work in the culture around us and within our puppetry community, and address them with actionable solutions.

With ongoing support and enough consistent effort, we are hoping to avoid the "dip in & dip out" approach to oppression conversation that tends to dig up too much and without giving time to process or settle or reflect, integrate, or name specific practices to shift.  We understand that this is deep work that can’t be done quickly, and that for us to gain movement forward into the peaceful future we desire, the work begins here and now. And that work begins with your support.

We will fund these initiatives in the order listed.  If we can meet the $5000 goal quickly, we will extend the fundraiser to $10,000, and apply these funds to the operating budget of the organization -- which is truly “Bare-Bones” -- we had two rain-canceled shows last year that meant fewer donations, and the extra funds will help us ensure we can give you incredible shows for next year and 25 years from now.

1) Anti-Oppression Space Creation $150 (1 person @ $100, plus a planning-session @ $50/hr); For Core Artists and community at-large.  A 1-hour process to guide us through the creation of “safe space agreements” in a fun and engaging way, that will help guide us through the process of building and co-creating the show.  To take place on “kickoff night” Sept 11th.  Led by Nicole Eknitphong.

2) Radical Empathy; Overcoming Intrinsic Bias. $500; Led by Jesus Ramirez.  A workshop for Core Artists and community at-large. Through fun exercises, self-reflection, and sharing our experiences, growing awareness of our own biases and how to work actively to shift our perspectives and build radical empathy.  A 2-hour workshop and a 1-hour follow-up debriefing session.

3) Mediation / Emotional-Processing Support: $480  ($80/session x 6 sessions)
Have a mediator available for 1 hour on Thursday evenings during build workshops.  If needed, artists and/or community members can sign up. If no one signs up, mediator can walk around and check in with people.  The concept here is “Support precedes Movement”-- Having a proactive and preventative approach to conflict-support will help us build trust, form authentic relationships, and help us go deeper in our art-making process together.

4) POCI Art/Kitchen Interns $2000.  ($500/person x 2 people, plus $1000 for coordinator)  Two young adults, ages 16-21, will learn how to prepare and cook large amounts of food (a beloved BareBones tradition of feeding artists and creators), learn how to run a vibrant community kitchen, and receive support and mentorship from the Art Staff to learn about puppetry, create, and perform or participate in the shows.

5) Self-care funds: $1060  (13 core artists and 2 co-directors + 1 production mgr + 1 stage mgr= 17 people x $60/person)
Funds will be spent as each artist most needs them: to pay for childcare, meals, gas-money, something fun, bodywork/massage sessions or other types of therapy.  Staff-artists are given an honorarium, not a living wage for the amount of hours they spend on creating the show. This small bonus would be a gesture of appreciation, and reflecting the value of self-care as important, because how we are affects the whole.

6) $260-500 *: as seed money for next year’s Barebones build, to be used for funding a training or group-process-facilitation in the area increasing our skills and awareness in anti-oppression work.
*(GoFundMe takes 7.9% of all funds raised. if you are willing to donate 7.9% extra, we'll cover the platform-fees and have more to bring to next year's initiatives)

7) Additional Funds Raised: If we can raise more than $5000, the donations will go towards the operating budget of the organization -- which is truly “Bare-Bones” -- we had two rain-canceled shows last year that meant fewer donations, and the extra funds will help us ensure we can give you incredible shows for next year and 25 years from now.

THANK YOU for responding to our call for community support of these initiatives, and continuing to develop our puppeteering-culture into one that truly brings “art into community and community into art.”
