¡Hola! Mi nombre es Bárbara González Fuentes, tengo 18 años, vivo en Chillán (Chile), y a comienzos de este año me asignaron una beca para estudiar por dos años en UWC East Africa (Colegios del Mundo Unido) en Tanzania.
UWC es un movimiento global que hace de la educación una fuerza para unir a personas, naciones y culturas por la paz y un futuro sostenible. Cada colegio reúne a estudiantes de todo el mundo, de diferentes etnias, doctrinas religiosas y contextos socioeconómicos. El primer colegio UWC se estableció en Gales en 1962, y ahora hay 18 escuelas alrededor del mundo. Su misión es enseñar a los líderes del mañana el valor de la responsabilidad social, la resolución de conflictos y el entendimiento mutuo a través de la interculturalidad y los valores del movimiento. Cada año, estudiantes de 155 países son seleccionados a través de comités nacionales, el proceso de selección se basa en los méritos y el potencial de los candidatos, tanto académicos como extracurriculares.
A través de un largo proceso de selección, en febrero el comité chileno anunció a 24 preseleccionados de todo Chile que compartimos un increíble fin de semana de selección en el mes de marzo. A mediados de este mes, recibí la noticia de que había sido seleccionada junto a otros 8 chilenos para asistir a un colegio UWC 2019-2021. El colegio ubicado en Tanzania, anteriormente conocido como International School Moshi, se unió al movimiento UWC este año, es por ello que seré la primera chilena en asistir.
Estudiar en UWC será una experiencia sumamente enriquecedora que me permitirá conocer otras realidades y culturas del país en el que estudiaré y las de mis propios compañeros. Lo que me motivó a postular es la experiencia educativa única que entrega, el bachillerato internacional, que permite profundizar y desarrollar nuestro máximo potencial en nuestras áreas de interés, una educación integral que lamentablemente el sistema chileno no entrega.
Siento que todavía me falta mucho por aprender y seguir adquiriendo más herramientas, es por ello que en un momento dado, luego de estudiar en el extranjero, me gustaría regresar a Chile y contribuir en el desarrollo de un país más justo, transparente y consciente e inspirar a otros jóvenes a convertirse en agentes de cambio como una forma de retribución y agradecimiento por todas las experiencias vividas.
El movimiento me ofrece una beca parcial que cubre la gran mayoría de los gastos anuales, como mi alimentación, estudios, materiales y estadía, siendo un porcentaje considerable, sin embargo, de acuerdo a la situación económica de mi familia, nos es complicado costear la cantidad restante que incluye pasajes de avión, el seguro de salud obligatorio, la visa y varios otros gastos básicos necesarios que implica estudiar dos años en otro país, que en total sumaría USD 9.600 (AUD 13.800)
Cualquier monto en contribución será enormemente agradecido. También, les agradecería compartir mi historia a través de redes sociales ya sea con sus amigos o familia. Cualquiera sea el aporte, o ayuda a través de difusión será muy valorada por nosotros.
Los fondos se transfieren a Bárbara a través de un tercero (Fabián Díaz, una familiar), ya que la familia de Bárbara no tiene una cuenta disponible para recibir el dinero en el país, es por esta razón que los fondos serán enviados directamente desde Australia y los donativos podrán ser realizados únicamente en dólar australiano.

Hi! My name is Barbara Gonzalez Fuentes, I´m 18 years old, I´m from Chile, and at the beginning of this year, I received a scholarship to study two years at UWC East Africa (United World Colleges) in Tanzania.
UWC is a global movement that makes education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. Each school brings together students from all over the world, from different ethnic groups, religions and socioeconomic backgrounds. The first UWC was opened in Wales in 1962 and now there are 18 schools around the world. Its mission is to teach future leaders the value of social responsibility, conflict resolution, mutual understanding, and critical thinking through a multicultural environment. Each year, students from 155 countries are selected through national committees, the selection process is based on the potential of candidates, both academic and extracurricular.
After going through a long selection process, on February, 24 pre-selected students were announced from all over Chile that shared a beautiful selection weekend in March. At mid-March, I received the wonderful new that I had been selected with 8 other Chileans for going to a UWC 2019-2021. The school located in Tanzania, formerly known as International School Moshi, joined the UWC movement this year, therefore I´m going to be the first Chilean studying at the school.
Studying at UWC will become an extremely enriching experience getting to know other realities, the country and, my own classmate’s culture. One of my motivations to apply was the unique educational experience it has, the international baccalaureate, which allows us to deepen and develop our maximum potential in our areas of interest; an integral education that unfortunately, the Chilean system does not offer.
This new experience will become a great challenge that will be involved in a highly demanding educational system. I feel that I still have a lot to learn and continue acquiring more tools, for this reason, at some point, after studying abroad I would like to return to Chile and contribute to the development of a more just, transparent and conscious country and inspire other young people to become agents of change as a way of retribution and gratitude for all the experiences lived.
The movement offers me a partial scholarship that covers the vast majority of annual expenses, such as food, study materials and a place to sleep, being a significant percentage, however, according to the economic situation of my family, it is difficult for us to pay the remaining amount that includes airfare, compulsory health insurance, visa and other basic requirements that are needed for studying two years in another country, which add up to USD 9,600 (AUD 13,800)

The funds are transferred to Barbara through a third party (Fabian Diaz, a relative), as Barbara's family does not have an account available to receive the money in the country, it is for this reason that the funds will be sent directly from Australia and donations could only be made in AUD.
