Infant Heart Surgery for Baby Fidel
Three days after Christmas I learned that my nephew, in vitro, was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect named HLHS.
In order to survive, Baby Fidel will need three major heart surgeries within his first few years of life. The first surgery must be performed within a week after he is born.
My heart is heavy with fear as my sister Misty and Fidel Sr. are faced with stiff challenges at a time when most couples are rejoicing with excitement as they await the arrival of a newborn.
Although HLHS is a life threatening condition, with prompt treatment, life saving surgeries, and proper care many HLHS babies survive to adulthood. There is hope!
The journey to reconstruct Baby Fidel's heart will be long. The surgeries and endless medical appointments will be expensive that is why I am asking for your help.
Although both Misty and Fidel Sr. work full-time, means are limited. Misty has missed time at work due to all the necessary medical appointments and travel to specialty care hospitals. The bills are piling up and for years to come, there is no end in sight.
