Babs' Veterinary Fund

$3,600 of $5,000 goal

Raised by 42 people in 14 months
Babette Minerva, or  Babs as we call her, is our baby. She's a 1 year old french bulldog who is lively, loving, and always making us laugh.
On the evening of 5/27, she was playing with her toys when suddenly she began acting strang. Dry heaving, lethargic, couldn't stand or even lift her head. We left for the emergency vet quickly, and by the time we got there she was screaming and crying. By midnight we received a call- they're worried about her brain. She began to exhibit blindness and paralysis in her back legs. We drove 40 minutes to another animal hospital with a neurologist on staff to evaluate her the next day, suspecting meningitis or GME.
As of right now, we have paid $4,500 in upfront veterinary costs, and we have not even begun a treatment plan for our girl yet. As 2 graduate students, we don't have much money left and we want to make sure our girl gets everything she needs and hopefully pull through.
Please consider donating to help Babs get the care she needs, and help us avoid making a difficult decision to forego treatment because of cost. She truly is a member of our family and our baby- we are devestated that this happened.

I will keep updates as we get them. Right now we are waiting to hear from the neurologist regarding her spinal tap and MRI.
UPDATE: Babs has been diagnosed with seizures. She stayed inpatient at the emergency clinic for 2 days where she received an MRI and spinal tap. We were able to rule out meningitis, and the vet believes the cause of her condition was a seizure that led to inflammation in her brain and spinal cord, which led to blindness and paralysis. She is back to walking around, and her eyesight has improved but has not fully returned at this time. She will be taking anti-seizure medication indefinitely, and has follow-up appointments as we continue to assess the cause of her condition, and whether this will be a recurring event. In total, our vet bills have totaled to $7,000. Please continue to share our page and donate if you are able! Every little bit helps, and we are so thankful to everyone who has helped our girl.

Thank you,
Alyssa, Sean, and Babs

Thank you to every person who has donated and shared Babs' page! We are so incredibly blessed to have such kind and generous people in our lives. Babs is recovering well at home, she is now on an antibiotic due to GI issues that have occurred since her discharge. She is getting her energy back and once her stomach feels better she should regain the weight she lost during this past week. We are so incredibly happy that she is recovering so well and getting back to her normal self! Because of our friends and family Babs got every treatment she needed and we are not homeless! If anyone is ever struggling with their own troubles or needs a favor, please reach out to me and Sean. We will be happy to help in any way we can, we wish we could have a way to repay everyone for your kindness. THANK YOU for helping us all get through this together
Love,
Alyssa, Sean, and Babs

Hey Everybody! Babs is still recovering at home. We spoke to her veterinary office today and are still searching for answers about her condition. They are now considering acute toxicity from ingestion, but we don't know how she got it or if this is in fact the answer yet. She is still very sleepy and loopy from her stay in the ER and her new medications and has spent most of her time home asleep. She will be returning to the vet the week after next for a follow up, unless she experiences another severe seizure or episode before that. We are so thankful for everybody's contributions and ask that we all continue to spread the word by letting friends and colleagues know and sharing the link to her page. We are so happy Babs is home, but that does not make her bills disappear unfortunately. We are still at $7000 so far in bills, far more than either of us have separately or combined. We gave up our rent and food money to pay the required up-front payments and emptied our savings accounts. As graduate students we don't have a great source of regular income and we are struggling to come up with money both to pay her bills and to pay our rent. Of course Babs is worth every penny and we could not be happier that she is doing better, but please don't see this as the end! We have a long way to go and we would appreciate any and all help we can get! If you are able to donate any amount we will be so grateful, literally nothing is too small. If you are unable to donate we definitely can understand, but ask that you please share her page! Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who has donated and shared so far, you have helped us bring our girl home.

I am so happy and relieved to say that after 2 awful days and $7,000 in bills that Babs is back home! We are watching her closely for additional seizures and she is now indefinitely taking phenobarbital, an anti-convulsion medication. She will need to continue to go back for evaluations as we try to discover the cause and if this will be a recurring event. We want to thank everybody who has donated to help us cover these costs, and to those who have shared our page! We ask that you continue to share and donate if you are able- we have a long way to go! We will continue to update about her recovery process, for now she is taking a long, well-deserved nap.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Alyssa, Sean, and Babs

THANK YOU everybody for your amazing, amazing support and love for Babs. We've been incredibly blessed by all of you and we are so touched by the incredible kindness and generosity of our friends, family, and people who are strangers to us but empathize with us and are willing to help. Babs' confirmed diagnosis is seizures. They resulted in inflammation around her brain and spinal cord, leading to vision loss and loss of mobility. We finally got to go see our girl after her MRI and she is back up and walking around!! We are told her vision will take longer to return, about a week, if it does. She can't come home just yet and we're staring a few thousand more dollars in the face before she's discharged, but you all have made it so much more bearable and given us the incredible gift of being able to focus on her health. Please continue to share her page for us, and thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.
