Gone are the days when an egg or a flour bag will suffice as an experience of taking care of a baby. Help us help parents and caregivers!
Our organization, Changing Children's Worlds Foundation implements an evidence-based parenting program known as the International Child/Parenting Development Program (ICDP-USA). We work with mental health agencies, hospitals, schools, community organizations, and county correctional facilities to train staff and welcome parents/caregivers to take our program and learn about social-emotional learning, building resilience, and self-regulation.
Our campaign is to raise funds to buy four Real Care Babies (as seen in the photos) to use in our parenting program that support at risk families. We know parents/caregivers will get a more realistic experience of how to interact with their children by using these simulated dolls. Below are some experiences from our use of the Realityworks Babies in the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center:
#1: A 15-year-old male with a 6-month-old daughter had never changed a diaper before. He stated he just didn’t know how to do it. We started by allowing him to practice on the Realityworks Baby while it was not programmed. We then moved to a low setting to get him more comfortable. Finally, we finished with setting the baby to a level that would model a more realistic setting while coaching him with verbal cues and showing affection while caring for his infant. The pride that he showed after feeling confident in his abilities was awesome to witness.
#2: A 15-year-old female who was 12 weeks pregnant came into the course with high anxiety regarding her pregnancy. She decided she would raise the baby with family support but felt unprepared to care for the child. Using the Realityworks Babies gave her a sense of security as she walked through role plays and exercises to help her prepare for motherhood. We could see the anxiety decrease weekly with the practice this opportunity provided for her.

Our “The Best Start” evaluation results over the past 5 years provide evidence to be statistically significant at the .01 level. The strong and significant improvement included the following areas:
