Save our Family's Beloved Dog, Barney!

Donation protected

With a heavy heart we desperately are in need of help to save our wonderful 6 year old piebald dachshund. Barney was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and immediately hospitalized and put on an IV along with numerous medications on Wednesday, July 2nd.  On Thursday night, we received a call from the vet at the emergency clinic and were told it was time to have a frank conversation as a family.  Barney was critcally ill and getting worse by the minute.  We were told he was not likely to survive until morning and we needed to make a decision.  Afraid he wasn't going to make it through the night, we made the hour drive to visit him late that night with our daughter in tow.  We couldn't think of not letting her see her best friend and pet him even if it was for the last time.

We were told that to continue his treatment through the weekend the cost is estimated at $3,000 on top of the $1,000 we have already paid over these few days and there would be no guarantees he would make it through the night much less the weekend.  Without hesitation, we knew we couldn't put a price on Barney's life and told them to do whatever they can to save our wonderful dog.  We consider Barney our "first born" as he was our only child for the first 6 years of our marriage.  When his human sister was born, the two immediately bonded.  He would sleep under her crib at night and follow her everywhere.  He is truly our 2 year old's best friend and it breaks my heart to hear her say, "Barney can't come home.  He's sick."  She doesn't understand the depths of everything he is going through, but she loves him and misses him terribly. The vets have said his case is as bad as it gets and he will need at least a week of hospitalization with no guarantees.  This is the worst case they have seen in a dog so young.

It is now Saturday and we are into day 3 of his treatment.  It is a miracle that he is still with us and an answer to our prayers.  Unfortunately, in addition to his diagnosis of pancreatitis, we have been told Barney is now suffering from diabetes with ketoacidosis.  Between the insulin, constant bloodwork, pain and nausea meds and trying to balance his potassium and glucose, we are well at a $4,000 balance with no signs of him coming home soon. It appears another week of hospitalization may be needed as he is still not able to eat, his glucose levels are too high, and he has ketones in his urine.

This is why we are asking for your help.  We are committed to doing everything we can to help Barney, but now we are looking at a balance that is rising fast. Our charges on top of the $4,000 we currently owe are estimated at $1,000 a day for possibly the next week.  We have to find a way to pay this as Barney is slowly making gains in the right direction.  He is a fighter and we can't give up on him now when he needs us most.  We don't want money to be an obstacle in the life or death of our wonderful furry family member.

As of late yesterday, the vets have finally been able to get his potassium levels stable and he wagged his tail when he saw us and even drank a tiny bit of water.  His glucose levels and sodium are still too high, ketones are still present in his urine and he is having to continue his pain and nausea meds, but he has come a long way since Thursday when he was not expected to make it through the night.

Please help us save Barney!  We cannot even begin to think about bringing him home until he starts eating, his glucose levels stabliize, and his body is flushed of ketones.  The vets are encouraged by his progress and seem to think that he may recover, but he must stay hospitalized for several more days.

We know the staff at Animal Emergency and Speciality Clinic are doing all they can, but we are trusting in God to bring him through this.  Please give anything you can to help bring our sweet Barney home.  We appreciate even the smallest donation as every little bit helps.  Barney means everything to our little girl and our family, please help our story have a happy ending!
