"To help Vermont school districts maintain their independence despite the threat of involuntary merger"

Vermont School Districts are being threatened with forced merger by the State Board of Education.

These school districts have studied Act 46, many of them have rejected merger at the ballot box.

These districts chose to make an Alternative to merger application as they felt they could best meet the goals of Act 46 in an alternative way.

The law allows for alternatives, the legislature agreed one size does not fit all.

Many of them have barriers to merger, such as debt, geographic isolation or lack of scale.

The districts worked long and hard on their alternative plans. They went above and beyond the requirements for merger.

But the secretary of education rejected their hard work and dismissed their plans as a matter of policy. 

Now they are threatened with forced merger by the state board of education.

Twenty districts have voted to take legal action should they be forced into mergers that are not a match for them.
