Australian Financial Literacy Launch

Donation protected
During my time in the military, I worked as a medic, looking after the health of Defence Force members. Throughout my service I found myself talking and helping people, not only health wise but also financially. I have gone on to host a community radio Business Show as well as teaching rescue courses for emergency services volunteers and first aid training. I was always trying to learn and improve my own financial knowledge throughout this time. After being injured, I decided to leave the military and find a place to set up my home. But I have struggled to find what I consider my purpose and moral alignment via employment as well as limitations because of my injuries. But all of the time I have continued to work with people, to improve their personal life and financial position. At times I struggle with pain and this feeling of helplessness, but when I teach and speak on radio, that seems to disappear. I have found that the candle that burns inside is for teaching. But not being a trained educator I kept thinking, 'I can't do that'.

I mean I have a TAE in training and assessment and completed fundamentals of financial planning. This leas me to consider banking but I feel the same moral issues, should I go down that path. So I started writing a book and created Australian Financial Literacy on Facebook. It was my hope, that I could take some of my knowledge and experience and give back to people that are where I was earlier in my life.  Where is that you may ask, out of home at 16, broke, hungry and alone and walking head first into borrowed money and the slippery slide down the financial river.

But, I feel I can do more.

So I have been working towards completing my book and getting it published, running financial classes and private tuition. Not to invest, or scam people but to give them the missing link. The link between school maths and the world of finance. I think we are missing the part, where we are taught to budget, set up money management systems, to protect ourselves, balance our accounts and have something left over at the end. This is where I believe I fit in and can make my greatest impact to improve the lives of others.

My aim is to cover the costs of publishing the book in paper form as I believe the ability to underline and write notes is important in the learning process. To produce presentations and have projection equipment, audio equipment and financial material available from many of the authors that I have read and who have changed my life, so that I can pass them on to others. I would like to take my training to various locations and to hire rooms to be able to teach in and also to be able to market these services. I also need to consider personal costs during this setup period. Due to the employment difficulties I have been facing I simply have not been able to raise the funds to get all of this off the ground by myself or borrow traditionally to do so. So, after speaking to many people that have told me how much this would help them. I decided that I needed to stop letting money stop me from giving and simply ask for your help.

A defining moment recently had me speaking to a university lecturer. She speaks with women in prison. I politely said, that a women as educated as your self, probably would not need what I do, but her clients may benefit and asked her opinion. Without hesitation, she looked me in the eye and said, oh my god you have no idea, I need that more than you realize and they would love it. I finally understood, people in all areas of society are hurting and perhaps, this is why I was meant to be here, to make it that little bit easier.

I would love to be able to create this program and training and to be able to hire others and create opportunities but it all takes money to start off. If you see a need for greater financial literacy, please make a donation, not only will you be helping me, but you will be dropping a stone in a pond, and who knows how far the ripples may spread.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Regards,

Andrew
