Austin East Girls Soccer

Something That May Concern You

You may not be surprised to learn that opportunities in our community are not distributed evenly. Some people have extra advantages and others disproportionate disadvantages depending on where they live and the color of their skin. Often, the issues are so large that we are unable to do much about them. But, there is an issue that people of good will can do something about.

The Austin East girls’ soccer team, led by a wonderful African American woman who is the school’s African dance teacher, were unable to play a full schedule of games this fall because of lack of funds. They were eligible to play up to 16 games but were only able to play 6 because they did not have money for home game referees and buses to travel to away games. Also, because of the condition of their old uniforms, they had to wear those of the boys’ team. This is a matter that should touch the hearts of everyone. Our community is better than to allow this to happen.

We admonish our youth to put themselves in safe places, to participate in healthy activities and to seek out strong adult mentors in order to ground themselves for their futures. That is exactly what the 16 girls on the Austin East soccer team have done.  Yet, we as a community have not yet rallied behind them and that is something we can correct. Never should any of our girls feel they are being treated as second or third class. We have a chance to let them know that the Knoxville community appreciates them and supports what they are doing.

So, what is needed?  The current season is almost over, but there are remaining expenses. And, funds need to be raised for next year. Here are budgets for the remainder of this year and for next year:

A. Expenses for remainder of 2018

1. End of season celebration/banquet $300

2. T-shirts @ $15 for 16 girls and 2 coaches $270

TOTAL FOR REMAINDER OF 2018 $570

B. Expenses for 2019 season

1. Bus transportation $3100

2. Referees for 7 home games, 2 per game @ $70 each 980

3. Balls, 3 per season @ $80 each 240

4. Refreshments and snacks 400

5. Required team fee per girl, @$80 for 16 girls 1280

6. Required insurance per girl, @$60 for 16 girls 960

7. Uniforms, 2 sets, for home and away, @ $90 per girl for 16 girls 1440

8. Banquet at end of season with T-shirts 570

TOTAL COST FOR 2019 SEASON $8970

C. Income already identified for 2019 season

1. Sale of concessions $1100

2. Team fees 425

3. Car wash 240

TOTAL ALREADY IDENTIFIED FOR 2019 $1765

D. Projected amount to raise for 2019

$8970 projected costs minus $1765 projected income equals:

TOTAL TO RAISE FOR 2019 $7205

These costs do not include cones for practices, two new goals, nets, goalie gloves, shoes and shin guards. The coach has insisted that the girls furnish shoes and shin guards and that has not been a big problem. The goals are questionable but were repaired this past year.
