My 6 year old daughter Madelyn was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Wilms disease, a rare form of cancer found in children, approximately 500 cases diagnosed per year. Mady is a fun loving little girl who loves dancing and horses. She went from playing T-Ball on Monday to having cancer on Tuesday. It all happened so fast, our lives turned upside down from one day to the next. She is recovering from biopsy surgery and port placement. She will have a long journey with chemo, radiation, and kidney removal, praying for remission. All donations truly appreciated to help cover medical expenses and treatments. Please keep Mady in your prayers.

We are very excited to announce that Mady is officially done with radiation! As always Mady was a rockstar but she was getting pretty sick of all the driving. We will continue to do followups with the doctor and have scans pretty frequently. Our next set of scans will come shortly after we get back from our Make a Wish trip in December. We are all very excited to get down to Florida and spend some time at Disney, Universal and maybe even the beach. One thing I did want to clarify because I did get some questions recently regarding our Make a Wish trip is that Mady is not terminal. She did have an unfavorable diagnosis and it did relapse but we are very hopeful that she will have a long healthy life. I had received some questions because we are going on the make a wish trip and thought that Make a Wish is only for those who aren’t expected to make it. This was once true but it is now open to those who are either terminally ill or face a life threatening illness or disease. Mady definitely has fought for her life and while none of us can predict the future, we are hopeful that her major battles are done. Thank you all for the kind thoughts and I’m sorry if anyone nervous that maybe she wasn’t doing as well as it seemed but luckily she continues to get stronger and gets more and more towards normalcy (hopefully back to school after the new year). We really appreciate all the thoughts prayers and encouragement on our journey. Hopefully we have clear sailing from here out.

We are very excited to be 100 days out from the transplant! It sure was a rough ride in those first 30 but she has been doing so great since. 100 is a really big milestone for the transplant. The likelihood of the really scary organ failures diminishes greatly. As I said Mady is doing really good. She is getting her hair back and its coming in so well that she comments on how when she gets out of the shower she can spike it up! Last week at her doctors appointment she also had a very important question that was weighing heavily on her mind... could she go trick or treating? Luckily she was able to convince her oncologist that it would indeed be a good idea to get the exercise walking around so her and her sisters walked the neighborhood having a great time.

With all the great things that we are so thankful for we still have more to look ahead to. On Monday Mady starts another 11 day stint of radiation to the area where she relapsed back in May. Luckily these are quick outpatient visits but they will be trips to Marshfield each day. On a positive we will have that behind us when we get to head to Disney on our make a wish trip at the beginning of December and all three girls are really getting excited about (and so are Heidi and I).

We are just so glad and excited that Mady is doing so well and the family is able to get back to normal. We really want to thank all of you for your continued thoughts and prayers

We are officially done with chemo! Mady had 96 long hours of chemo she is done. It was a rough one and she has gotten pretty sick from it but hopefully she will get her stomach settled within the next day or two to give her some time to get a few meals in her before she starts getting hit with mucositis (painful inflammation and ulceration of the digestive system). On Tuesday Mady gets her stem cells transplanted back to her. After that it is all about recovery. Continued thoughts and prayers for minimal complications are appreciated.

Tough to believe it has been a year since we first found ourselves rushing to Marshfield to figure out what we would do and how we would treat this cancer. It is tough to think back to that day and how ignorant and oblivious I was. I remember the radiologist saying that there is definitely an abnormal growth and if I knew what Whilms disease was. I said no thinking oh, just something random that would need some medicine to take care of then back to t-ball and life as normal... then... the dreaded word... cancer... and the bottom dropped out and life as we knew it was turned upside down. Over the past year we have had the lowest lows, further than I would have ever imagined we would be able to endure. We also have had some incredible highs and unbelievably great times. We can't believe how much everyone has and continues to rally behind us and our daughter. For that we thank you all.

On to today. Well, Mady continues her fight against the relapse. She had the surgery to remove the latest tumor in the beginning of May and recovered wonderfully from that. Then at the beginning of June she had a surgery to switch out her port (the access point into her where she receives her chemo, transfusions and fluids) with a new one that has two lines to prep her for her stem cell harvest and transplant. The doctors then tried to rev her system up to bring her stem cell numbers high enough to harvest. Unfortunately it didn't work so last week she received chemo Monday through Friday to bring her system down and try to remobilize it and now is getting more drugs to catapult her numbers up high enough to harvest. Once we are able to get her stem cells harvested it will be on to the high dose chemo and transfusion of the stem cells. We are praying that will take care of things once and for all. Thank you all again for you continued thoughts and prayers as we continue down this path that started out a year ago.
