Every Child Deserves a Voice

How do children communicate when they can't speak? A popular communication tool called "Pragmatic Organization Dynamic Display Communication Books " (PODD for short) is NEEDED by children in your local school system. The PODD communication notebook is clearly demonstrated by an engaging little boy in this video. This child has both motor and communication difficulties; yet, with PODD, he conveys information, answers questions, and navigates through categories and descriptive words to convey that his snack is all gone.
In central North Carolina, our amazing nonprofit organization, New Voices Foundation, has been working diligently to provide support for classrooms, schools, and teachers of children with severe disabilities within Wake, Durham, Alamance, Chatham, Johnson, Chapel Hill-Carrboro, and Orange County Schools. As New Voices board members, we are very proud to be part of this foundation supporting these children in the schools, many of whom would benefit from a PODD system.
For these young kiddos to learn to communicate using the PODD system, teachers and other school professionals need skilled training. Professional training can be obtained to learn skills such as partner assisted scanning, modeling PODD for a child, expanding a child's communication attempts, eliciting language in a functional context, and demonstrating knowledge of how a PODD system is structured. Without adequate training, PODD systems are not implemented effectively.
With tightening school budgets, funding for training like this is not always available unless paid for by the teachers themselves. To date, New Voices has always said yes to requests for financial help from teachers and therapists to attend trainings that will help our kids communicate and learn. However the need for training is outpacing our current training budget so New Voices is reaching out to you for help. PODD training costs $250 for each person, so $1000 raised will positively impact four classrooms, potentially 20 students. Our students will be given a voice.
